I can't believe the prices on the shorts nowadays. I aint rich but I need shorts that will do the job. I use PI Ultrasensors. They work well but......seems they've been skimpin' the last year or two. Used to have a totally padded chamois. Now there seems to only be two strips in the crotch. Seems the quality has gone down a bit IMO.
I checked out a few shops and OH MY GAWD. I was paying $60-$70, but this time $90! Nearly $100 to sit on my ***?
I checked out a few others like Specialized, $140?
Gina paid for the PI's cause I needed some shorts but there goes my allowance for the next 6 months!
I tried more inexpensive models from Performance. Use 'em for short rides cause they're only good for 20-30 before my b***s start hurting!
Any good sources for good shorts. If Gina has to pay $100, I'd atleast like something with some padding!:o
Living in Upland, but travel OC often. Have good shorts, will travel!:D
BTW,I'm 220-240 depending on how often I visit my friends Ben & Jerry, so big guy rec's well appreciated!

From what I heard, the Performance Ultra shorts are pretty close to the PI Ultrasensors, and they have sales on those quite often. They're currently $50. (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=19895&subcategory_ID=1120)
ps. Perf. also has the PI Ultrasensors for $80 right now. Not cheap, but not $90 either.
Here's the Performance Under $100 shorts page. (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/sub_cat.cfm?subcategory_ID=1120&orderby=2&filterby=1&view_all=0&searchSize=)

This is a great reason to join a club/team even if you don't race. You typically get great deals on your team kit. I generally pay around 50 bucks (give or take $5.00) for jerseys and shorts (both styles). Plus you get to support organized cycling, look way cool like you race (even if you don't). You also get to know other club members, which just expands your cycling social circle. Not only do you get great deals on clothing but most clubs also offer hardware deals you just can't get from any store, whether it's online or down the street.

Recently I tried Performance Elite Bibs and was rather surprised at how well they fit. So much so I bought another pair. People have been telling how much more comfortable bibs are over shorts. They are right.
Your problem is size. Performance did something with their sizing a couple of years ago. Now, with a 36" waist, I take a 2X, which is as large as they go. 1X would be too tight. Right now the bibs are on sale for $45.

+1 on the Performance Elite bibs. I bought a couple pairs when they were on sale for $34 and I won't go back to shorts now. :)

The Ultras have been working well for me as well. I've got two pair and ready to buy a 3rd. Interesting that they are not the most padded but have been just fine on several Centuries. As mentioned, the price point is excellent as they are nearly always on sale.

I get mine from www.gitabike.com, the giordana brand. They are expensive but, they last a long time. I rode the same bibs on 4 doubles last year and all the training rides. I stopped buying Pearl Izumi because they kept falling apart.

Performance works fine for me, and they're cheap when on sale. I also like Voler for price and quality. Again, look for sales for even better prices. Occasionaly you can also find shorts being closed out by the manufacturer or by shops at swap meets at reasonable prices.

I actually prefer less padding. I used to own some shorts with thick padding (can't remember the brand) and I was always fidgeting around trying to get it under control.

The Performance Ultras seem to be a size smaller, too.

I use Bergamo bibs which I got at King's in seal beach. They are fantastic, well made and very comfortable, but at $180 a pop they are not cheap. I also have tried Adidas, PI, LG and Hincapie, but they do not fit as well. I wear size XL, 230 pounds, 6' tall.

I never found the Ultra shorts to fit me quite right as a big rider.. I am 6'3 right in the same weight range as you and have found many good deals on shorts.. An overlooked brand is Adidas and Santini shorts.. The adidas are more american cut while the Santini's are euro cut (order 1 size up from normal)
The T-mobile Adidas shorts have a little thicker chamois than the Pearlizumis but are very comfortable for a big rider..
http://www.bicyclinghub.com/tmobilebibs.html
The Santini CX shorts are a nice bargain and great shorts for under 60.00 right now.. They are cut a little longer than the adidas shorts.

I just picked up my first pair of LG bibs, and they were pretty comfy during the first ride. I chose them over Castelli, Descent and a couple other brands because I seem to have good luck with LG being perfect for me...
however, only time will tell...
I HATE my PI ultrasensors for anything longer than about 40 miles, and I zlready use Performance Century (regular and gel) for those rides.

I get my PI Microsensors from ebay. Usually around $70-80. That's a good discount from the $120 retail. In the summer months, price usually goes up to $90 so now is a good time to buy.

I'll check into the shorts mentioned. But sounds like Performance is the way to go. I used to use the gel century shorts, but they changed the shape of the insert and wasn't qite as comfy as before. Maybe I'll tyr the XXX. DIdn't realiz they changed sizing. For a second there, I just thought I was a heavy guy!:D

+1 on the Performance Ultras - I have their bibs and they're comfortable.
I'd also keep an eye out for Nike 10/2 or Specialized BG Pro's if they go on sale - they're pricier, but they feel oh so good.

Flat out best deals I have ever found and the longest lasting shorts I have even worn came from the Pace Sportswear outlet store at 15422 Assembly Lane, Huntington Beach, CA 90620, phone: 714-891-8716. Factory seconds and returns from bike shops and other deals. Untouchable deals. I got a pair of rigid soled road shoes for $5.00, Seven years later a pair of their shorts are still holding out. I think it ran ~$12.00.

Bibs of the same model compared to shorts will be more comfortable. I just recently got a pair of the Specialized bibs that are great and they were $120 regular price. I will be buying more. I have no need for shorts any longer.

I've been a big fan of Descente brand for a long time, mostly because of there shorts and bibs. I just went to Colorado Cyclists online and bought two new pairs the "Strada Aero-X Pro Bib Short" that were on sale for 109 dollars. I've been wearing these since I started riding again and even though they're not cheap, I'm afraid to switch and be disappointed with something else.
