Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Low rolling resistance, high strength tire?

Hi guys --

Picked up an extra set of wheels yesterday (open pros with ultegra hubs). Went with 32 spoke, as I have open sports with 105 hubs with 32 on the cross bike and have had zero issues...and the new wheels have butted spokes on top of it.

My thinking is that I keep the OEM set that came with the bike (2006 Kona JTS) for commutes and rides that involve dirt portions (there's one loop I love that includes about 5 miles of dirt), and use the new wheels for low rolling resistance, smaller tires. My current setup includes 700x38 semi-slick tires, and I'm thinking the new wheels should have 22 or 25 slicks. I'd like something tough and flat-resistant, but also quick and efficient as i'm going to start doing centuries this year.

Looked at conti gatorskins in 25, and specialized armadillos. I can afford something more expensive if worth it.

BTW, I'm 6'3 and about 225.

Thoughts?

I'm probably starting to sound like a company schill, but I've been very happy with the Schwalbe Marathon Pluses that I put on recently.
They'll meet your flat-resistance requirement for sure, but might be a little more 'tready' than you're looking for if you want a true slick or a really minimalist tread (more like a wear indicator than a tread.)

I've ridden them from 220 pounds down to 199. Around 2000 miles mostly over country roads littered with nails, glass, sharp rocks shaved away from hill faces and gravel.

TOTAL FLATS: Zero.

I've got those Conti Gatorskins on my Lemond. I've got over 1,000 miles on them this past summer. No problems or issues. I'm 250lbs. I like them.

I'm about your size, a little heavier, and I've been using Panaracer Pasela TGs on my Atlantis for three years or so. No complaints at all--they're fairly light, roll well and last a long time. I have cut a couple of sidewalls riding on the railroad ballast (sharp rocks alongside the tracks) along the river near my house, but that's not the tires' fault. Get the TGs, not just the plain Paselas, for the kevlar bead and belt.
FWIW, I use 700x32s for most riding, and I have another set of wheels with 35s that are nice on rough pavement or dirt roads. You're pretty big for skinny tires.

I run the Conti Ultra Gatorskins, 700x25 on my road bike. I'm 6'1" 230. I've used armadillos, the contis roll and ride better. I like the Conti 4-Seasons too. If you want something durable and a bit more suited to rougher roads and packed paths, Conti Contacts and the venerable TT2000s in 700x28 or 32 have never done me wrong on my commuter, xcross and touring bikes. Yes, I like Continental tires, been riding them for years.

Another vote for the Bontreager Hardcase..... only I ride the 700X25's. I'm generally between 210 and 220 during the season.
