General Cycling Discussion - Bike racks..

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've decided on a hitch style bike rack. So then I could move it between two cars. Right now I'm trying to decide betweeen two different racks. I have road and a FS MTB, and I don't like the idea I have to buy a extra bar to hook it up to alot of racks. THe Saris Bat rack looks like it will fit the job, or a rack that has a fork mount, like the saris backpacker. What is everyones opinion on these racks? Is their any drawbacks to useing a fork mount hitch rack?
The Saris Bat Rack is a solid choice I sell lots of them they work well so my customers say.

Although you have already narrowed your choices down to the Saris racks, have you also considered the Delta BikeHaul (http://www.deltacycle.com/transporter/bikehaul.php), Sportworks Transport (http://www.bicycleracks.com/sttra.asp) or Hollywood Teamrider (http://www.hollywoodracks.com/2&3.htm#teamrider2)? All three of them allow you mount bikes of all kinds of frame designs without a faux top-tube bar or wheel removal in a pretty secure fashion. I have the Hollywood Teamrider and it works well with both my road bike and my mountain bike (that has no real top tube).
I have not definately decided on saris brand, still looking around at others to see what is available. I sort of like the idea of the added bumper on the BikeHaul model.. I realize it does not offer any protection if someone really hits you but a slight bump it might protect. (I've been rear ended twice in 10 years, both times car was crushed).

Note that the Delta bumper can be mounted on either the Hollywood or the Sportworks rack too as it's simply a 2" insert that will fit into any expandable hitch-rack's square endcap.
I second the notion for any Saris product. Great people with great product. Never had a customer complain.
Just wanted to thank everyone for their help. I ended up getting the sportsworks transport. I was actualy hoping to spend less, but I checked out qutie a few racks at my LBS and other stores and the sportsworks seemed the strongest, and most adaptable one out their. Only used it one time so far, but it definately holds my bikes securely. I have no worries about them when I have them on the rack.
