Winter Cycling - Friday to be coldest day in two years here !

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

For the NYC metro area they are saying 17° F high with strong winds (below zero windchill during the day) and I am ready with my best winter setup for my ride.:)

Keep those ears, toes and fingers warm. ;)
How long of a ride are you expecting?
Up here we refer to that as warm. We're going well below zero, with daytime highs struggling to reach zero. Nice and brisk. Someone snapped a photo of me the other morning clomping up the walk, complete with my own little condensing vapor cloud following me.

I'm going in the woods Sunday. I hope it warms up to 25 or so :)

It's only about 12 miles round trip but long enough to know how my winter setup works. I will be using my lightweight goose-down mittens with wool glove liner inserts, Giro Ravine snow sports helmet ,balaclava and PolarWrap mask.

Hmm... It's my contention that you don't really know how well your winter setup works until you've ridden for 2 or 3 hours. (Unless your winter setup is only set up for 12 mile rides? Or unless it takes you 2 or 3 hours to complete a 12 mile ride?) Plenty of times I thought I was all set for cold temps, and for the first 20 or 30 miles I was...but by the time mile 50 rolled around my fingers or toes or face was suffering big time.
I was out all last weekend riding in high winds & sub-freezing temps, so now all my coworkers have dared me to ride in to work this coming Friday! (I'm in NYC.) While I love a good dare, and it's only a 24 mile round trip commute, I think I'm gonna pass.
Seems to me that whatever set up makes him comforable for 6 miles at a time is the one that works.

This is not a "Ride" like when I go for my 70 mile round trip rides in warmer months but is my daily commute. I don't know about you but it doesn't take 2-3 hours for my fingers to get cold.

What a rip-off, the temps got above 20 in the afternoon and did not feel all that cold the way the media built it up. I remember when I was in Alaska for two years and it hit minus 64° F and we slept outside in tents for over a week.:D
