Ok, this is inspired by Mr. Beanz shorts thread. Probably a dumb question. What is the difference between a bib and shorts? Is it just the one piece feature? -And, who invented liquid soap and why?

What?? Why would a woman wear a bib to begin with? Oh, good Lord, it would take forever to strip those puppies off. Talk about a loooooonnnnngggg rest stop.

They need bibs with a button flap...like old longjohns. I'd buy 'em.
ME...I'm sure, if the right opportunity (ahem) presented itself, you'd have no problem getting the bibs off quickly. ;)

What's so great about the bibs???

Bibs, no question. Just tried my first pair a few weeks ago, and I am hooked. #1 is no problem because the front pulls down. Girls can't do that. Taking a deuce is still a problem, but how often does that happen during a ride?

Everything stays in place. The constant, although slight, tension of the upper part makes the pad stay where it is supposed to. Plus, you don't have that drawstring waist to bother you. There are logistical concerns.... (see my other post)

liquid soap does not grow bacteria like bar soap. i don't know who invented it though. Or if that is the reason why.

Ron welcome to the bib wearing population. Everyday I recommend bibs to people at the store and to the one I get this crazed look on their face. But invariably, if they approach it with an open mind and try a pair on they buy them and then come back to the store weeks/months later thanking me that i made the recommendation.
1. they stay in place the "suspenders"
2. they don't bunch up on your waist
3. they don't expose the small of your back while riding....IMO that's unsightly
4. for most clothing manufactures they will put their best chamois and materials and their best technology into their bibs
5. they provide you a secure snug fit up to and above your belly button.
6. They just feel great. I have been wearing bibs for 8 years I will never wear shorts again!!!!!
I generally wear bibs. I do have some shorts that I'll wear on occasion. But then, I also am happy to wear khakis on short commute rides, swim trunks when cruising a beach trail with friends, or nothing at all when in the privacy of my apartment on a trainer. But for comfort while riding, in my opinion, good bibs is the way to go. The only alternative that matches it for comfort is wearing nothing, but that's not really acceptable outside of my apartment.
Shorts dig into my waist in an uncomfortable way. Sure, they were nice in summer months when not wearing a base layer, but now that I have a pair of PI bibs with a mesh type material (like the material in my base layers) in the "suspenders", I think they'll be comfortable even without a base layer on. So I think my few pairs of shorts will see less use this summer now that I have nicer bibs.

Jason! I always read your posts, but I'm going to have to take a better look before reading them from now on if you talk about riding your trainer in the buff!:D

I'm not bad with a sewing maching and think I'll just put some type of buckles (for lack of a better term) on the front of some older bibs that are unwearable (can't bring myself to throw them out) to see how it would work out. I think it would catch on.

Not too impressed with that chick, sorry, but in long tights I like bib tights (did that make sense?) and in shorts I can go either way but I prefer bibs.

For those of you who wear bibs, do you wear an undershirt below the straps? Seems like it could be uncomfortable without one.

My newest pair of PI bibs has the middle of the straps made of a meshy material like my base layers. I think it might be reasonably comfortable without a base layer. It's been too cold for me to care, but ask me next summer and I should have an answer for you.

Usually, but that's because I like a base layer in almost any weather. If it's really hot, I'll go without, and the straps are not an issue.

This winter, I've been wearing my base layer (usually a long sleeve Under Armor shirt) under the bib straps. During the summer, though, nothing under the bibs... and they are just as comfortable as can be.

Nothing under for me and I havent been bothered at all.
The straps have never bothered me at all, with or without a base layer.

i always wear a base under the bibs, unless it's over 100º, then i might go without a base layer

That doesn't work with all of them. Some bibs have a front section that comes up way too high to pull down. Those are a bit more problematic, but it can still be managed. You just hafta hike up one leg and pull your junk out the side.
As for #2 that's where a jersey with a full-zip comes in handy. Still a hassle, but it sure beats trying to pull a jersey with stuffed pockets and a number pinned to it over your head. Bib shorts + half zip jerseys = teh sux0rz.
Still prefer bibs though. For all of the reasons mentioned.
I do wear shorts sometimes. Baggies that I wear on my MTB, and for commuting, and of-course casual clothes when just bumming around town or running errands. Pretty much exclusively bibs for training/racing though.

This thread crops up about once/week in road, so no worries there.
For me, bibs by an almost unimaginable margin.
Random side note on bibs... my newest pair of bibs (PI Aerosensor) became my favorite pair as soon as I got them. However, I have begun to notice that on longer rides the chamois is not as comfortable as my Giordana Tenax. Just fwiw. I still love the Pearls... but on longer rides, the Giordanas get the call.
