I want to build some wheels for my fixed/single crosser. The idea is to try to keep the cost down (yeah right). Should I go with hubset from formula or IRO (maybe Milwaukee) or use a Paul High Flange on the rear and something like a 105 hub up front?

Does a better rear hub overcome the aesthetics of a matched set or are we starting to split hairs?

Splitting hairs. I have a Mavic Cosmos up front (cause I got it for 60 clams from one of the mail order joints) and a Formula laced to a OPro in the rear. Saved me all of 10 dollars though, compared to a set of built wheels from IRO (Formula/DeepV's)... but I got exactly what I wanted.

If you are actually racing cross quick release is awfully nice for the pits.

Nothing can overcome aesthetics.

Seriously, that isn't something you should have to ask somebody else about. Not to mention that a Phil rear hub costs more than a lot of complete hubsets...

I personally don't really care about having matching hubs. Buy the best hub you can afford for the rear and anything you like the looks of for the front.

I have a White Industries ENO on the rear and a Shimano XT on the front of my fixed/SS MTB... works fine, doesn't look bad.

i strongly recommend trying to rustle up a shimano 105 front wheel. old, new whatever. it's ****in' smooth and really well-sealed, and is not going to break the bank. mine is QR so i always lock up both wheels super easy. i love it.
