View Full Version : Sushi
I love the stuff. California rolls (crab/avadado) and the eel one are my favorites. Avacado is the sincgle best ingredient I think to make sushi tastefull. Cream cheese is nice, but too much of that stuff can be too rich. I wonder just how safe it is to eat it. Anyone else favor sushi?

I had sushi tonight.
Never had it. I prefer my fish fried.
Eel and raw salmon are my favorite sashimi. I love a good california roll, though.
I hate sushi. The only seafood I like is shrimp and sometimes crab legs. Oh, and fish sticks- the hot dogs of the sea.
Happyfeet introduced me to sushi while we were dating. I like it now! Which is good and bad, bad cause it's so dang expensive for the good stuff! (And you want the good stuff!)

Whole Foods or especially Central Market has the best rolls I think:)
Northwest roll with cucumber, cream cheese, and baked salmon, yummmmm
Oooh, sushi!
I make my own. I have a rice cooker, and that makes the hardest part easy. Get frozen sashimi grade fish at Harris Teeter, but I'm going to see what the area asian store has in a weekend or two.
Even the rice and seaweed together is where it's at heh.

Like picking fruit and eating it.
We have places here like todai and moonstar. It's 15 for lunch and 20 for dinner buffet. They have an entire sushi bar with people making it fresh right there. Moonstar has a chocolate fountain, and every imagineable asian food under the sun.
Unfortunitely, I don't do sushi. But I'm sure it's alot better than prepacked crap from some store.

I love the hydrogen bomb rolls the local place makes....it's full of that green salad stuff, some roe, and TONS of wasabi....the name says it all.
for actual sushi, gime me two orders of Toro, an order of Unagi, and an order of Sake (the salmon, not the drink), of course with tea! :)

Cali roll...love it, buts it really an american roll ;) Those who truely love sushi know. My "night out" is sushi almost everytime. Might be the fact I am engaged to a italian/french/pastry cheft (thats 3 differences btw) but sushi is awesome. And fresh west coast fish is worth the coin
And green tea, saki and any other stuff the japanese call tasty, dont touch my plate area. They seriously can't drink. (alcoholic or non alcoholic drinks)

I think I may have a real addiction to sushi. I have really intense cravings once in a while, its almost scary. Like a drug addict wanting a fix.
I live in the Midwest so top line sushi isnt an option. (unless its freshwater, then the great lakes can supply that.) What I can get is good enough I guess. The local place "Tokyo Steak House" has Hibachi style buffet and sushi buffet for only about 8 bucks! Their sushi selection is limited to 2 variations of the Cali roll, and the crunchy spicy tuna roll, which is basically tempura battered spicy tuna roll. (Which is beyond amazing)
I also enjoy Yellowtail, Eel, Sake (salmon), and crab.
Seriously though, try a crunchy spicy roll. If your local place doesnt have it tell them its just a regular roll, but will some spice (not in the form of wasabi, but hot pepper paste) and then deep fried in tempura batter. I can eat rolls and rolls of that stuff. Its great!
I love sushi. Sashimi is even better.
How fresh can that be?

"Fresh", huh? In the United States, the only sushi allowed to be raw and never frozen is tuna. By law, all other sushi has been frozen at some point. And even a lot of tuna is frozen. One extremely expensive Japanese restaurant in NYC (Masa, I believe) went on the record stating in a NY Times article about sushi that the tuna they serve is up to two years old, sitting in their freezer. They'll use fresh stuff when they can find tuna that meets their standards, but otherwise, they resort to their stockpiles of good frozen tuna. And in any case, really fresh sushi evidently doesn't have the right texture because it still suffers from rigor mortis.
I love sushi. Sashimi is even better.

I'll eat rolls, but I'd rather eat massive quantities of sashimi.

i like sushi pie.
Sashimi, yum! And when it's been covered in shoyu and furikake then the outside seared and the inside still raw, that's heaven. Just haven't been able to find a thick enough slice of sashimi grade tuna to do that lately. Oooh, I want some now.

Sushi and sashimi are my absolute favorite foods on the planet. It's not just food, it's a complete sensual experience, absolutely orgasmic. I'd eat sushi every night if I could afford it.

I like sushi and sashimi. I prefer sushi that's raw, vs the Cali rolls and, often, smoked eel, or cooked shrimp. When I can find raw eel, I like the sea eel vs the freshwater eel. I favor stronger flavors, like mackeral, though I'll eat any sashimi except urchin. Even a Japanese friend of mine won't eat urchin except right at the dock in Japan, when it's as fresh as you can get it without being on the boat. He agrees that urchin further inland tastes like a sewer smells. That was my experience twice. So, no urchin for me.
I like to special-order the heads of sweet shrimp deep-fried. That is a really delicious crunchy accompaniment to the softer textures of sashimi and rice. I also like marinated baby octupus! Mmmmm!

You can surely pick some up for lunch at Dean and DeLuca uptown? Not the best sushi/sashimi, but ok in a pinch.
Also, at Mimosa, you can order your grilled salmon "cold," which means seared on the outside, and raw on the inside. That's not bad.
Have any of ya'll watched Man VS Wild on Discovery Channel? There is an episode where he is dropped in Alaska to survive. He catches a live salmon and just starts taking bites out of it. Extreme Sushi!!!!!
I went to a sushi place for the first time last week when I was out in Cali. I don't know what the guys ordered for me, but it was amazing. Some of the best food I've ever eaten.
Love sushi, great now Im hungry.

My first exposure to sushi/sashimi was an "eat first & I'll tell you what you've eaten later" ordeal. Loved the stuff.
We took the kids to a sushi bar one time, and although my oldest grew up eating it, he hadn't had any since he was 4... he was 12 at the time, and picked up the entire wad of wasabi with his chopsticks. I tried to stop him from popping it into his mouth, telling him how hot it was, to which he replied "how hot can it be?" (it was evidently too hot for the poor kid - he drank water through the rest of the meal, and we packed up some handrolls for him to eat later). To this day, that tag line sticks with that boy (now 23).

When my family vacationed in Hawaii (Big Island) in 1989 we chartered a small fishing boat, since my Dad is an avid sport fisherman. Wasn't a particularly successful day; between the 6 of us we caught 1 small tuna and 1 small mahi-mahi. We took the obligatory photos of Dad holding these nowhere-near-trophy-sized fish, and then the boat crew said that if we didn't want to keep the fish they would buy them from us (because they could sell them elsewhere). My Dad, in what proved to be the only good decision of this entire vacation, said they could have the fish if they would just give us a fillet from each.
We went home with 6 lbs of raw sashimi that afternoon, and consumed it within 2 hours of being caught! Pure heaven.

Okay, Vega, you've made up for that deep fried cucumber foolishness. :D If you ever swing a trip to the SF area, I'll gladly take you to the best sushi place in town (which in SF is saying something). It's tiny, and odds are there'd be a significant wait for the bar (essential - the chef is too much fun to watch not to sit at the bar), but oooohhhhh, what a slice of heaven.
I'm right with you on the uni (urchin), though - looks what came out of a baby's diaper, tastes like what came out of a baby's diaper with salt added, with an incredibly slimy texture thrown in for good measure. What more could you ask for in a food?

My wife will not eat any of the sushi with raw fish but I managed to get her to like maki rolls that have cooked seafood in it (e.g. California rolls).
I've started my daughters very young. They love sushi. They've only eaten kappa maki rolls (cucumber and rice wrapped in seaweed) though but they've been eating that since they started on solid foods.
