Man,

On my way to work this morning, about 9 miles into my ride, a guy who looked like a college age kid on a mounting bike was descending a hill past where I was waiting at the stop sign. So far, nothing unusual.

But this part of my route (like almost all the other parts) is hilly. So what goes down must come up. Only when he went up, he stood up and just kept flying all the way up the hill.

My fuzzy brainlike cranial capacitor began to process past images.
Suddenly, "Bingo!" I remembered an identical guy wearing spanky cycling clothes on an expensive bike that did the same routine, in a different part of the city. Had to be the same guy.

Not only did he fly up the first hill, but when I crested that hill, he was flying up the next one.

It was the same guy, had to be.

I'm surprised a young fella like you didn't/couldn't keep up with him. ;)

Since you saw him earlier he obviously knows a shortcut you don't. :D

On the very infrequent occasion that I ride without a heavy load, I'm amazed at how easy a hill can be. I'm not saying I fly, but, it's not grueling.

Next time you see him, offer him a Timbuk 2 bag stuffed with papers and a laptop, and a couple paniers stuffed with clothes, shoes, and other commuting "ballast". Then, have him start up a steep 3/4 mile hill, from a dead stop.

Tell him this is great hill training, from the commuters at BikeForums.com.

:)
