Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Nice IRO Build. What parts?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
This is similar to the other IRO parts thread...but not so cheap.
What parts would you put on the BFSSFG IRO bike if you want it to be nice and light? I don't mean pocket-full-of-cash nice but I would like this to be a nice, light bike and would like mid to high-level parts on it. What would you put on it and make sure it's still light and strong?
Especially what wheels and cranks?
Bars can be so personal, there's no point in going there.
I've always bought generic seatposts. What seatpost would you buy if you were trying to keep the weight down?
I want to make my IRO one of my nicer bikes. Not a blinged bike, a light, solid FG bike. I'll take the time to add good parts to it since I have other bikes to ride in the mean time.

I'm picturing most everything in black, but the color is not germain to this thread, so this is how I'd want to build it:
Open Pro with Formula DB spokes
Shimano 105 cranks/BB (53T)
EAI 20T cog
Decent threaded headset
nice older quill stem
On One Midge bars
Modolo road lever
Shimano 105 front brake
Supertype seatpost
Flyte Ti, or Brooks Pro
Huh... that came out a lot like my Rush.

Miche cranks and BB or Campy road BB if you feel like the upgrade

Velocity Aeroheads(great weight/price ratio)
A lot of people say this, but they weigh the same as Open Pros, and cost the same as Open Pros. CXP 33 are maybe 20 grams heavier, and often available much cheaper. So I guess I have to wonder are people finding better deals on Aeroheads than I am, or are they just repeating an old wives tale that Aeroheads are cheap for their weight?

well according to the manufacturers the open pros are 30g's a piece heavier, which i admit a really small amount(especially when considering how much stronger the open pros supposedly are) however I work at a bike shop and velocity offers better employee deals then mavic, or actually the distributors u have to go through...so that's why I settled on the aeroheads...and i have to admit the aesthetic factor...aeroheads come non-machined
that said, i have open pros on my road bike
*edit*forgot to say that my perception of price is skewed by the employee deal

Rats! I just keep hoping to find out that the rumor that Aeroheads are cheap is actually true. ;) I've been lucky enough to find deals on Open pros as cheap as $30, never gotten anywhere close on Aeroheads.
The difference between the manufacturers stated weight, and the actual weight of a part is often greater than 30g. I got my weights here http://weightweenies.starbike.com/listings/components.php?type=rims Incidentally Deep Vs appear to be about 50 grams heavier than Velocity claims.

On paper Aeroheads are lighter than OPs. However in these days Aeroheads are coming out heavier than on the spec sheet. the dies are apparently wearing. so weight is a wash.
I don't know where you've been pricing rims, but OPs are usually in the $65 range, whereas Aeroheads are more like $40-45. Maybe you're getting awesome deals on OPs?
this doesn't apply to track bikes, but one advantage of the Aeroheads is the off-center rear rim which builds into a much stronger wheel.
EDIT: wow $30 OPs? at that price i'd stock up.

Granted I got lucky on the Open Pros, but most places seem to have Aeroheads at $60-65. On very notable exception is IRO, they have silver machined Aeroheads for $50 a pair right now. Get em while their hot. If I could find a pair of pink machined Aeroheads for $80, my daughter would be one happy girl.

airbomb and ae don't have pink, and my daughters desire for Pink wheels is the only reason I have to shop for areoheads right now.
Those wheels are beautiful, but my 12 year old daughter does not get a $300 wheelset before I do.

Im building up a green iro frame 1 inch
brown deep-v's with green milwaukees, and grey vredsteins
milwaukee track cog and lock ring 17
shimano freewheel 18
1 inch dura-ace headset
miche cranks mich bb(possibly campy bb)
mks gr'9's
and I think i might buy a three different kmc chains in different colors and make an ugly a$s tri color chain
and I just got a good deal on NOS 2004 dura-ace brakes
flat and short nitto pearl stem
easton EA90 straight bars or if I can get them cheap EC90 straight bars
and whatever ugly mountin riser I can get
whatever carbon seatpost I can get cheap
and either a cheap light comfy saddle or the rock hard ti and carbon sitting in my parts box.
and an ugly top tube pad that I might embroider the word "GayTarded" on
this thing will truly be gaytarded
This is my second fixie but my first was off-the-rack winter bike (Raliegh One Way). So I've got a few questions.
For cranks, are single-ring cranks setup for a different chainline than normal road doubles (105, ultegra, etc. on either inner or outer rings)?
The IRO parts are relatively cheap. Are they heavy? I don't see any weights on the IRO site.
I used to ride a lot but have been out of it for awhile. What is Miche? Are they track parts or a brand that's come along in the last ~10 years?

********? Maybe. ******** means slow, and your very colorful bike will be slower than a less expensive lighter one would be. I think it's silly to pay extra for carbon parts then use deep Vs. the weight you save using carbon (if any) will be less than you gain using Deep Vs. You could build a lighter bike for at least $200 less. It can be tough sometimes to justify spending an extra hundred dollars to save 50 grams, but spending an extra hundred to GAIN a hundred grams???

From what I know the IRO branded parts are decent, but nothing to write home about. Some people complain the cranks are not very round causing tight spots in the rotation.
Miche is an Italian company that has been around since 1919. They make good medium priced stuff. In the brand hierarchy they are generally considered a step down from Campy. How much of that is real, and how much is imagined I don't know, but they do make quality components wherever you want to put them in the status symbol hierarchy.

I just threw down for a 50 in green with the 1" threaded
headset. Mine is going to be all-budget, so I'm going:
-cheap Formula/Mavic wheels with Gatorskins
-17t EAI track cog, Dura Ace lockring
-SRAM chain
-old Sugino VP cranks
-maybe the IRO brand BB, but we'll see if something else turns up
-leftover Tange headset
-whatever cheap threaded stem I can get my hands on
-either my old flip-n-chop bullhorns or else the Nashbar special
In the mean time, I am going to scour for some cheap used
caliper brakes, hopefully something decent will turn up on eBay
or at the bike swap.
What is the diameter of the seatpost clamp going to be?

Weird. I rode a lot in the 80s and early 90s and never heard of Miche. I even had a cycling mentor who was way old school so I'd think I'd know about them. Thanks for the info.

Not sure if they were importing much in th 80s. I didn't know about them then either. and my boss who is an old school roadie, and a big Italophile never heard of them either.

Lots of online sources......Bens bikes, Trackstar, Sheldon Brown, etc. Basically search for Sugino, Miche, Stronglight, Shimano, etc. But, don't be afraid to check your LBS. They usually can order just about anything anyway.

Two builds in mind for mine... One is a "gentlemen's bike" style, the other is a parts swap from my KHS.
GB:
-Formula/Velocity wheelset. Probably silver.
-80's campy post.
-Black Brooks.
-Nitto technomic.
-Nitto B617 promenade's.
-Some headset...
-Cranks I haven't decided on... Preferably something fluted or otherwise old looking.
-Vittoria's; white.
-MKS quill pedals.
-The frame is "flat black". I will probably re-spray it and add some old-timey pin-striping.
Parts Swap:
-Miche/Aerohead wheelset
-Sugino "messenger" cranks
-budget post and saddle.
-Deda stem
-Rush fork
-Ritchey WCS hs.
-Alloy risers
-Red vittorias
-GR-9's.

so, this isn't a my-queer-politics-are-more-right-than-your-queer-politics. that's not my intention. but i'm curious about your use of the word reappropriation. in the context you're using it, it usually means taking a derogatory term and using it positively, as an affirmation, a good thing, or instance of unity/commonality. uing gay as a derogatory term isn't reappropriating language; it's just doing what they do, except you're queer.
