I was riding North towards Santa Ana from the beach at 20 mph about 2 pm today. I saw a guy standing on the edge of the concrete embankment looking down into the river channel driving his radio control gas buggy. As I rode by him the buggy jumped off of the embankment and landed directly under my front tire.

I ended up riding directly over the buggy with both front and rear wheels. When my rear wheel went over the buggy I was totally out of control and rode up the concrete embankment to the right of me, then down that and toward the steep embankment to the left of me which was down into the channel. I was able to stop before I went down the ledge.

My front tire blew immediately. My rim is bent, which is the second front wheel I have damaged in two weeks. I have no more spares....I hope there is no more damage to the bike. I briefly looked it over and did not see anything else.

The guy was very nice, but I was in such a hurry to get home because I have to go to work that I didn't even think to get his name or ask him to pay for the damage. OH well at least I did not get hurt.

I guess the moral of my story is to watch out for radio controlled vehicles! It may be time to order those DT Swiss wheels I have been looking at.

OH ya, one last thing. It was beautiful out today! It was 71 degrees and hardly any wind........

One dude nearly did that to me on the SART once. Near the 405 tunnel. He ran his car up in front of me. I l gave him that "you stupid MOFO" look. He just looked at me and said,"oh, sorry". Some people have no sense!

As an RC fan with two nitro (gas) trucks and one car which is fast enough that I've yet to find a good place to drive it safely, I'd say you should have demanded payment for the wheels or kept the car.

I see a few people running them in the Coyote Creek channel, but they are down in the bottom where they're safely away from bikes and pedestrians.

Wow, you got lucky. Imagine if you have went off in a bad way, that guy might have just took off and left you there.

Those little cars can cause some damage. I have a little battery powered one and it get's up to about 17 mph. At 7 or so pounds, that's a decent amount of velocity.

About a year ago, I was at a nearby park with the woman and my daughter, we were playing frisbee and just enjoying the day. About 100 yards away was a big dirt area where a guy was messing around with his gas powered RC car.

Well after a long while I was walking back to the truck to get something and his RC was headed right for me. Something happened to the car and it lost its signal, went full speed in what happened to be my direction.

I saw it at the last second, jumped to the side and the car hit the curb and bounced into my trucks bumper. It was moving fast since it was one of the high priced one's.

If it had hit me, I'd have been in some pain.

Anyway, good to hear you're ok. I've hit a rabbit and a squirrel on my roadbike, luckily it felt like just a small bump.

They can be very dangerous. My car is probably 15+ pounds and is good for maybe 60mph. Hence my not driving anyplace where there are people or cars or... anything. It would be nice if other people were more responsible with their toys.

I've heard of people getting sprained ankles from being hit by some of those things, even a rumor about a broken leg (not sure about that, though, since they only weigh about 2 lb). They get speeds over 80 mph on velodromes. Interesting that they find a bicycle track to be an ideal race course for them.
