Road Cycling - cable gear indicator

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
i've seen on some high end bikes that on the cable coming out of the hoods it has a gear indicator...does anyone have one and post a photo so i could see them upclose and also where can i buy these?

They come with STI levers. I sold mine for $5.
they are Dura Ace gear indicators, if that helps at all. Bikeman.com has them in 9 and 10 speed for $12.

i've got a pretty good gear indicator. Too hard to maintain the desired cadence shift down. Spinning too high of cadence for the desired speed or effort, gear up.
And if you really care which cog you're on, there's this little trick, called looking.

I got one, it is useful sometimes. Got it from my LBS - just ask them for "inline gear indicator" - it was about 8$ - totally worth the money.

I use mine all the time. Great on a climb to remind me how many gears I have left and if I need to start thinking about going to the small ring before I HAVE to.
I have the Dura-Ace indicator, works fine, but I'll likely not reinstall when I change cable housings.
i'vc got one. came with my bike. a bit redundant with my flightdeck. unlike merlin, i appreciate being able to check my gears with looking at the rear cog. handy in a tight pack.

Funny, even after looking at the FlightDeck dashboard, there are times I sitll wish I had one more gear .. and I know I'd been in the last one for 2 miles up this darn climb.
*fun*

Whatever you do, don't ry to lube the cable traveling thru the indicator. I met a guy that tried and what a freakin' mess! It was clouded with a black wet film. I oftenwonder if he ever got it cleaned out!

My only regret about switching to Campy was the loss of my Dura-Ace gear indicator, pretty much for the same reason garysol1 said.

I'm with merlin. Admittedly my powertap gives cadence - but wouldn't you rather buy a computer with cadence rather than a gear indicator, for roughly the same price difference?
I've had many of these. $4 at my upper end LBS service counter.

I really like the one on my Flight Deck - it's just impossible to read while climbing out of the saddle.

I have one and I love it. What I love most about it is that it says "Dura-Ace" for really no reason. I mean... that's just good marketing.

Hm. I don't get it. It takes me like 0.2 seconds to glance down and see what gear I'm in.
Eh, I guess that could be important in a race or something. Whatever. Have at it.

I know I am going to get accused at baiting here. However, I would guess if that they came with Campy instead of DA, we would have endless threads about this being another reason why the Record group is superior…
I think these little indicators are kinda cool.

Think it's available as an 8 speed? Or should I just get the 10 speed one and ignore the markings?

You can get the 9 or 10 and just know when it's in a certain spot which gear you're in.

I have the indicator on 6 out of 8 of my bikes, for most if not all of the reasons given by the other users above.
I don't suppose these would work on SRAM 1:1 rear derailleurs?
My initial reaction was, "why?" I mean, i've never really been in a situation where I needed to know exactly what gear I was in, and if I was curious I would shift up/down and back to where I was to see. However, the person (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=3742252&postcount=6) that pointed out that it's good to know exacly how many gears you have left brought up a good point. I hate when I'm on a climb and go to downshift on my rear cogs only to find out that there's no more available. I don't know if it's worth the $8-$12 plus the time it would take to install, but it seems like I'd find it somewhat useful.

Put it this way, if you do put it on, you will like it and never want to take it off. Usually the people who oppose or think gear indicators are silly are the ones who haven't tried them.

My bike came with a gear indicator and I find it convenient and helpful. If I was building a bike I'll surely install one, but I won't refuse a bike that does not have it.

wish i had one on campy. its more convenient to have it in front instead of having to look back to see if youre cross-chaining or if youve got more gears

+1 .. My new ride doesn't have one yet.......YET....but it will have as soon as possible. I use mine on my other bike to determine when to change the front rings and also I don't want to guess and have to shift to find if I guessed correctly or take effort to look at rear derailer when on a steep climb or in a pace line.
