TLC or Discovery Channel did a program on giant excavators. The one in your pictures is in Germany if I recall and is used to dig for coal. If you ever get a chance, watch the show, it is very interesting. The Germans seemed to have a pretty good program goin. The company doing the digging seemed to have a coprorate conscience and repaired the land pretty well after mining the coal.
