Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Gearing?

Excuse me for my probable ignorance. I've been seriously considering getting a single speed for commuting back and forth from work. The terrain here is relatively flat and riding the Felt back and forth seems a bit much. I rarely shift, and then only to break up the monotony. I figure I need only one gear. It's a 10 mile one way commute and very little elevation. What are your suggestions on gearing? I've pretty much settled on what bike I'll get, I just need some suggestions on what the gearing should be. Before any of you "Go Off" on me, I've been commuting for about 7 years, first on a MTB and then converted to a Felt f75 (That I feel is a bit too much bike for a commute). I normally bike to work about 3 to 4 times a week, if I'm not sick. The weather is not a much of a hindrance, unless it drops below 17 degree's (That's just freakishly cold!) But, that don't happen very ofter here. I really would like some input here. Last year, before I moved, I converted my Schwinn Moab2 to a single speed and it was geared 32x18 and it seemed way to easy and slow. I gave it to my daughter, she seems to like it, but doesn't ride much. I want gearing that will get me to where I need to go in a timely manner and not make me hurt when I arrive? 48/16 wont make ya hurt but it will only give you one skid patch..

As the OP is considering a singlespeed skidpatches aren't really relevant.

You say you rarely shift on your current bike, what gear do you use mostly? That's probably where i'd start.

i'd probably work around the existing gears if your buying a complete.

say it comes with a 48t front ring maybe a 17t back?

something where you don't have to replace front and back...

but then who knows if your buying complete.

Ride your felt to work staying in one gear. Do it a few times in different gearings and see which you like best. See if you can match that gear ratio when you build up your fix/SS. Done.

Also, next time use line breaks/paragraphs. Makes reading your questions much, much easier.

I run a 48/18 on my SS, top speed is about 25mph @115ish rpms. I think that the 48/16 woiuld be better at the same speed, the RPM should be closer to 100 with a few more MPH to spin at the upper cadense range. I normally pace my speeds from 18-22mph with my current gearing. The gear felt tall at first but easy to top out, but good balance for hills for me. Since you don't have much hills, I'd push the larger gear you can.
