I've gone to Princeton this way:

Take Rt. 13 out of Philly. Follow it until it intersects Rt. 1 near the Trenton Makes Bridge. Go down the exit to Rt. 1 and follow the turnoff for West Bridge Street (just past the bottom of the hill). Stay on the road, at some point it turns into East Bridge Street, and then it turns into the Trenton Makes bridge. Take left to Broad St -> right to Brunswick Ave -> enter Lawrenceville Rd through a silly looking circle. I think this road is 206 or 209 or something. It goes all the way to Princeton.

Rt. 13 isn't spectacular, but I thought it was alright. I am unsure of the legality of riding on parts of 13, you may wish to check with PennDOT before taking this route.

Depending on how many miles you are looking to log, there are nicer rides into NJ than going through Trenton. If you can stay on the PA side along the Delaware up to the Washington Crossing Bridge you can take some back roads into Princeton from there. Not sure of the County Route numbers, but any old map should do. Most of the roads in that part of the state are nice country roads. Roads through Princeton and Lawrenceville (Route 206) can get a little dicey with traffic.

from Philly i have taken the Ben-Franklin Bridge to Camden. There is a walkway/rideway path above the traffic your get on at 5th street (not too easy to see, they rotate sides of entry - sometimes from the east bound, sometimes the west bound side, and close it 7pm to 7am). we have been caught inside after closing, luckly were spotted by drpa and let out!
riding through Camden can increase anxiety for some. there are individuals there that could instill concern (i think it got voted worst area to be in USA in 2005-6). i did not have problems myself, did ride through some red-lites, minding my own business.
there is no other bicycle access points to get accross from Philly now. the Camden Water Front, in the summer, opens a ferry service for walk-on passengers but i don't know if they would allow bicycles.
B/F bridge is the way to cross!

Camden can be dangerous, but I think it's danger to visitors is sometimes overrated. If you stay south of the Ben Franklin during the day, you will be fine. It gets a little shadier at night, but on a bike you are probably in and out of an area fast enough that you will be fine. I've taken the PATCO from the City Hall stop (5th and Market) back to Philly at all hours of the night (midnight, 3AM, etc). I don't like hanging out in that station too late, but I am still alive.

For NJ roads and Bucks County PA along the Delaware River, there's no better resource than www.njbikemap.com, with its indications of scenic roads, elevation changes, etc. You might also find some useful ideas on Bill Cotton's web site: www.billcotton.com.

Has anyone walked the Tacony - Palmyra bridge? The map says it takes 20mins to get across, but is it safe?. Is there a sidewalk or something? Although annoying I think this might be my best alternative as the route to the bridge and exiting from it are very bike friendly.

That map is fabulous. I had been trying to figure out a good way to get from Lambertville or Trenton area down to Cherry Hill and it makes it easy. Wish I didn't spend so much time trying to work it out myself.

One question: the dashed line for "off-road trails" - does that denote unpaved or any kind of greenway?

Possibly check Bikethisway.com....for cue sheets?? I think taking Patco over to say Haddonfield or beyond wouldn't be a bad idea...or it is possible (friends did it last year) to cross the Tacony Palmyra Bridge and ride River Road north. Good luck. K

The tacony palmyra bridge has a sidewalk on one side and is easy to cross. The traffic on both sides is a mess even in a car and is not bike friendly, it is kind of dangerous even for people that know the area
