Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just saw this ad today for a Hummer Mountain Bike. $795 will get you one just like the Marines ride. Folds into a 3'x3' size and is rugged. Best of all, it won't show up on radar!
Wow. Now I can burn all the oil in Iraq driving my Hummer to the trails and then I can ride around on my Hummer Bike undetected by radar. Being detected by radar has always been one of my major concerns when out on the trails.:)
Ha!
I heard about the bike- probably some yuppie bike you get free when you purchase the toy- I guess that $795 is nothing compared to the $62G you throw down for the basic Hummer (with none of the goodies attached to the Hummer, of course!).

But is it any good? ARe Montagues any good? I like that it folds so small and yet is a full-size bike with decent components. What do you think for an occasional weekender? Thanks in advance.

So should an "occasional weekender" like me consider one of these? Looks good and I like the small foldaway size. Any and all advice appreciated! Thanks in advance.

the marines don't actually ride that thing do they? (not such a stupid question if you've seen the history of bikes in combat)

Bruce, you can get a much better deal simply going to your local bike shop and seeing what they have, unless you're really set on having a folding bike. Even then, you might still find a few folding models at and LBS, and then you could try a couple different sizes to make sure it's comfortable.
I think the last time we talked about the hummer bike, the price tag was a little higher...like $1200.

I suspected as much. Too much being paid for the name, plus a bit heavy for most purposes. Thanks very much.

It looks ok.....but I see that bike as being incredibly hard to lock up. Given you are supposed to carry a folder..but sometimes that just not practical.
For some reason I was thinking of the pre-racing Honda bikes...my god those things are crap....I think they were made by pacific cycle. poorly anodized rims, sub-200 bike with full suspension (nuff said), and had parts that seemed to be even lower quality than my base model diamondback. Now my DB isn't bad...but even I consider my shimano set on my bike to be the base level for anything decent....the crankset and derailers especially to me are as low as anyone should go....and somehow Honda found cheaper.....not to mention it had a one peice crank.....

BTW Bruce, I'm not saying it's a bad bike, having not seen it close up or talked to anyone who has. My main point is that, if you're just getting into cycling, you will very probably get a much better deal and fit by visiting a bike shop and talking to the salesman. He should be able to help you figure out what type of bike best fits the riding you plan to do and get fitted to the right sized frame. Size can have a huge effect on comfort, with the effect compounded the longer you're riding.
I did check out the Montague site. They're offering it for $650, although the specs are similar to what $300 would buy in a bike shop. Folding is probably not worth $350 to most people.
If you buy it from the Hummer website, it's $795 (same specs as far as I can tell), although they also offer a somewhat nicer version with XT shifters, a Rock Shox Psylo Fork, and Deore discs for only...hmmm....$2000. Both are available in 2 sizes. Definitely sounds like you're paying a bit extra for the name.
Armed with 11-tooth pulleys for quieter running and reduce chain fatigue. Equipped with rubber boot cable protectors
:roflmao:
I've had the misfortune to have assembled one of those piles of crap and if I never see one again it'll be too soon. I feel for the Marines who were issued this junker, but it's like the old Army saying goes "Never forget that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder."
Ya' just can't keep a good marketing team down.
The amusing part is that they're selling it as an "accessory" for the H2. To think that anyone with a HUGE ugly beast of a car like the H2 would need a folding bicycle! I can't wait to see what they'll try to sell next for those tactical trips to the grocery store. People have such simple minds.

I'm thinking a Lark (think of those electric carts some seniors use) equipped with an 8-inch suspension, all wheel drive, and a 3-cylinder engine...they could call it the "dummer" :p
