From now on, you have to put quotation marks around "winter."

Every day this winter I look more and more like you with that getup. I'm trying to find some cheap ski goggles...is $30 a bad deal?

I've been looking at them, but it hasn't gotten really cold for weeks as of yet.

I heard that in New Hampshire, It was -29... the wind-chill factor was -86 .... Anchorage? Mass? I didn't think it would get that cold anywhere but the polar regions!

depends on how often you use them. do you actually ski or board? if so then maybe $30 would be cool.
I picked up my pair at TJ-MAX for $15 and they're a decent pair.

any idea if they would fit well under a helmet? I used to have a pair, but when I started wearing a helmet again I found it would jam them down on my nose and make life really uncomfortable.
oh, it gets that cold in new hampshire

Being a messenger in the cold isn't so tough since you get to duck into buildings about every 5 minutes.
well, we do ride in 100 degree heat + 100% humidity + sun that will take your skin right off from may until october, so 30 is really cold.
..... with the 21mph wind chill.

Got my goggles. I just picked them up at the head shop I saw them at originally for $30. They're nicer than the other ones I've seen that were cheaper, so I don't think they were too much. Can't wait to wear them out tomorrow!
BTW - Does the lens color mean anything? I wanted the pink lensed ones but they were scuffed up somehow, and all the others were heavily tinted (no good for night riding).

My helmet won't fit over the layers of stuff on my head. I'm rollin' with ski goggles too.

Does yours have that crap in the back that lets it expand? It's a tight clearance but it eventually pops onto my head if I have the expander open all the way.

An amber lens like you got is good for sharpening things up and blocking some glare, great if all you use them for is biking. A darker lens (or even mirrored) is more appropriate when that bright sun is reflecting off of acres of pure white snow. A pink lens probably works about the same as amber, I've never used pink myself:p

Anchorage is actually pretty mild weather-wise. Fargo beats it for cold routinely. For the serious cold, check out Fairbanks, AK or International Falls, MN.

Lense color as far as skiing/boarding goes is partly a personal choice thing. The amber/pink work differently for different people but the purpose is to increase the contrast in flat light (sun in the clouds and you lose the ability to detect snow variation). For biking, i use my old ski goggles.
Someone was wondering about how goggles work with helmets, they make helmet fit goggles. My ski helmet was always more constricting than my bike helmet so a helmet fit goggle should work with at least most bike helmets.
Finally, I actually suggest clear plastic for bike goggles. Otherwise, they're useless for night riding (or i consider any kind of tint useless for night riding).
who'd you sell it to? (or where is it going?)

i'm really getting in the swing of riding this winter. 12F is the coldest it's been so far, and that was no problem. the more you do it, the better you can fine tune your clothing. that's 99% of cycling in the winter - just figuring out what works and what doesn't.

Exactly how i feel. I've enjoyed riding each winter more and more. And since i just bought myself a crosscheck fendered and knobbied, i'm eager for a little bit more snow to ride though.

I used hippos on the mcycle in northeast winters for about 5 years. Hands on the mcycle get far colder than hands on the bcycle, so yes, they work great.
Of course, the real benefit on the mbike is that your bare hands (or nearly bare hands) can still work the controls. You dont have that worry on a bbike; 'specially a fg bbike. Getting some big 'ol fat mittens would be just as good.
