Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Any interest in a group buy for IRO Rob Roy frames?

First I want to say that I have *not* talked to Tony about this.

Would any one here be interested in a Rob Roy frame group buy? Even if Tony says yes, I have no idea what the price would be. If I can get at least 10 people here who are interested I will talk to him and see if it's alright.

The group buy is still on until Feb 21st, you didn't miss it.
I would be interested if there is a possibility.

Right, but the other group by as far as I know is for Mark V / Angus frames, not Rob Roy.

I need a steel steed with room for fat boots.

I edited my original post... Had I known about it I would have put my request in a bit early on into it.

Anyway, I am getting a little ahead of myself and shot an e-mail out to Tony just to see what he thinks. Obviously it won't be cheaper than a Mark V, but possibly could be cheaper than the Angus.. Who knows!

In the mean time a review of the Rob Roy can be found at:

Are the TT measurements actual or measured horizontal? I'm not sure about the sizing. Also, does anyone know what special tubing is used? I posted these questions on the web site 'contact us' page but haven't heard back yet.

I don't think it would have mattered. More than a few people expressed interest in the rob roy, but the overwhelming consensus was for an angus/mark v. So if we want a rob roy at a group rate, we're just going to have to take matters into our own hands! Maybe we should post this on the cyclocross forum too...

You might get enough people from the cyclocross/SSFG forums combined to get Tony to consider it. :)

I'd be interested. Unfortunatly I don't have time to read the whole thread on what the deal is and how it's proceeding. But if someone wants to keep me up to date... for the very least of finding enough people for the buy in, my e-mail is timmyc123@gmail.com

well, the tt on a rob roy is *almost* exactly horizontal. i'd say less than a half centimeter drop from steering tube to seat cluster. so the tt measurement can be considered both actual and effective.

tubing is not name brand, it's pretty light though.

it'd be a good idea to throw something up in commuting and road as well, at the very least. but somebody oughta talk to tony before trying to gauge interest.

oh yeah, hi garagegirl. i'm the one whose rob roy you had commented on on saturday.

thanks for comin out

Hey there! We had an awesome time, I'll be back out again as soon as there's another ride. So much for internet anonymity, I guess that means no more drunken posting or getting involved in clipless v straps discussions at 3am...

I'd be very interested. More interested than the angus i put a deposit down for. But that shouldnt be too hard to get rid of...

I find this prospect interesting, but I would be at least five times more interested if it was a special tubing like the other deal.

I know I could have went about this two different ways. But given the amount of angus/mark v frames that are going to be sold I didn't know how much of a demand would be left for the RR - and if no one was interested I didn't want to waste Tony's time. I've already called a few times and got an answering machine. I'll keep trying and as soon as I find out something I'll post it here.

I too would be in. Just let us know before Feb 21, because if the RR is a no go I would still take advantage of the IRO buy.

Well I heard back from Tony and received this response:

"We can do this after the fixed frameset is done."

So it looks like something will be possible. I don't want to press the man for pricing information because it sounds like he is very busy right now. I will post an "official" thread once I hear something.

"Lets talk in March."

This is the last I'm going to talk about this until March. I'll keep you updated after that!

I just checked the other IRO BFSSFG thread, and they're expecting their bikes in May or something. I was looking to get mine built and on the road by the end of March, so I may have to bail on this deal... :(

do Tony a favor though, and get a consensus on the specs before you send the details to him. i got so sick of all the whining little babies on the other group buy that i decided to drop out thinking it would never happen and bought me another bike (right before Tony actually set up the group buy site, oh well...).

that being said, i'd be interested in a Rob Roy.

If only we'd had this idea BEFORE the angus buy. Then we could've gotten our bikes first. Oh well, all good things are worth the wait.

I would be in for this if we could get one of those track style droputs with a deraileur hanger on it or maybe just a regular horizontal dropout. Would this be a big deal? Isnt the Rob Roy already road spacing?

dirtyphotons
02-04-07, 08:44 AM
Isnt the Rob Roy already road spacing?

its halfway between modern road and modern mountain spacing. works for both, a derailleur hanger would expand its functionality a lot, just remember that you're gonna need braze ons (or zip ties) to do a rear derailleur.

Ken Wind

Who needs a derailleur hanger? Gimme an internally geared hub!

bonelesschicken,

a derailer hanger is not likely to happen. you can get your local welder to weld one on for about half a pizza and a six pack

I would say pu a nexus on it so you don't have to worry about grimey gears
