View Full Version : Any interest in a group buy for a Rob Roy frame?
This is a group buy that MAY occur. I still have to talk to Tony - the Pres. of IRO.
A review of this frame can be found here: http://www.dirtragmag.com/print/article.php?ID=807&category=stuff_reviews
While it is a single gear cyclocross frame it can take some gears with a Nexus, SRAM, or Rohloff internal gear hub.
I don't know IF Tony will want to do it or what price he will go with, this just to gauge interest.
interested.

I am interested. I'd get much more use out of a Rob Roy than a street fixie.

I tried to scan the Fixed group buy from IRO but didn't see what their final price was...
What kind of price/discount do you think you could pull on the Rob Roy?

150 is the price of the ssfg track frame. The rob roy will be more, but not sure how much, and I think we need at least 50 people to get a quantity discount.

I'm in. I think a ss cross frame would have more utility than the group buy that is going on now.

^^ Oops yeah. My head is spinning from all the research I have been doing on finding a new steel frame.

I would be interested if Tony does a special tubeset like he's doing with the Mark V/Angus. I put three hours of singletrack on mine last weekend and definately think it was a great buy.

I'm a maybe, depending on the details: frame only? frame/fork? cost? any chance of specially made rear stays so it can fit a 700x45c big tire for my monster cross cheap dream bike? :)
I received an email from Tony this morning:
"We can do this after the fixed frameset is done."
I am not going to press him on pricing right now as it sounds like he is real busy. However, once the fixed frameset group buy is completed, I will make sure to post an "official" thread once I get all the information.

yeah, I'd potentially be in dependent on price as well. If I'm buying one IRO I might as well buy two, right? ;) Then I could retire my current straight-guage beast of a fixie commuter with the Rob Roy and use it for some cross action as well. I'd love to throw a internally geared hub on one of those things. Fun times!
ps. definitely no hurry. :)
ps. definitely no hurry. :)
but i need another bike right now. even if all my friends and family think i'm nuts. some sort of grumblings about how "five should be enough for anyone" and all that. but i really need a single-speed town bike...
well, maybe not need. but i've got some disposeable income right now that wants to be disposed of on a singlespeed townie...

I'd be interested, but put me in the "maybe" category for now, because I do not have the cash for it yet :o
is this going to happen or should I just plan for other things?

Update us as info becomes available, please.
A badass SS, especially if it'll take jungle cross tires for trail riding would complete my life at this point.
Anymore info on the Rob Roy Groupbuy? I think I might have one in my future...

from what i can recollect, tony said he'd consider one when the current group buy is done with. the current ones will probably be shipping in early july, so that'd be a good time to get in touch with him about it.
i really love my rob roy.

I have been thinking about this frame anyway.
If I'm not mistaken, he made a change or two to the frames for the other group buy. Not that I want to start a debate about changes to the frame, as it would make a group buy more difficult.
However, if a deraillier hangar was added to the dropouts (and I've seen a rear-entry dropout with der. tab), you end up with a frameset that can do everything the CrossCheck can do.
I would buy one in a heartbeat.

The crosscheck still has better tire clearance (700x45 vs. I think 700x38)
Yes If this happens i want one!!
derailer hanger is a killer idea... the vandessel country road bob has reardropouts and a tab....
I'm almost 100% my cross bike is going to be geared and I'd rather buy another frame from Tony than anyone else..
Has anyone kept in contact with IRO about this?
Does this have rack and fender mounts? If so, you might get some interest from the Commuter folks (including me).
If I have $$ come time this happens, if it does, I may be in. The same fork ends but with a derailleur tab would be cool.

yes, the normal rob roy does have rack and fender mounts, top of the top tube cable routing, and braze ons for two water bottles and a cable stop in the back.

I correct myself:
If I have the $$ if and when this happens, I WILL be in. I just checked them out and they're cheaper than I remember.
And to reiterate, a fork end with derailleur tab (like on-one inbreds have) would be super awesome, but I'd still go for it with just the regular fork end.

Well, then I would be VERY interested in a superduper all-weather gets me to work on time fixed gear workhorse.

I am planning on getting a FGSS crosss bike (IRO & San Jose are the top contenders), so I am definitely interested, if the price, specs, and turnaround time are right.
Hope this works out.

I am interested...give me the price for a group buy. I've been e-mailing Tony about the Rob Roy for some time now. Also, does it come with the powdercoat if group bought? And, would Tony be willing to build one up with his parts?
Thanks
