Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Two bikes that may not be on everyones radar

1. 2007 Co-Motion Mazama. True, you may have heard of this bike. In past years it has been built up as a hybrid. But in '07 it has been rebuilt as a road bike! Built beefy with tandem rims.

I'm interested. It seems they custom build each bike to your specifications. I guess there are no testimonials here since that model is new. Who wants to be the guinea pig?

I have a Co Motion tandem and can attest to their craftmanship and fine bikes. I am going to email them and see what the sizes are that are being offered. Looks like a killer bike (albeit an expensive one!)

I've got to give Randy Schlitter a lot of credit, he builds a lot of his bikes to hold Clydes. Many of his Crank Forward bikes will hold 275lbs. and more. I have two of the CF bikes and I love them. There's guys keeping pace with traditional roadies on the light-weight strictly road version of this bike. But CF riders still get snubbed and laughed at... I don't care.

I wonder about bikes like the Co-motion, it looks like a well thought out frame with some good components. ( I wonder about some of the choices, Kalloy seatpost?). What make me wonder is the cost of the frame $1375.00, at that price you are getting close to custom frame territory. A custom frame will fit you and not be a compromise. Where the price does go up in the custom, is in the complete bike. Manufacturers get a much better price point on their components. Having said that however a Clyde has to remember that you will have to upgrade many of the components on any bike to hold the extra weight.

I am presently getting a custom frame built and it has been one of the most pleasurable things I have ever purchsed. It will end up costing not much more then the full Cro-motion bike, and I have picked (with help from the builder) every single tube, component, graphic and colour. I think a better choice.

hoss - I agree. I sit here wondering why I would get a Co-Motion instead of either going for a Long Haul Trucker "kit" for $400 less than JUST THE FRAME, or spend just a little bit more to get a custom frame. It really makes me wonder, especially considering that frame likely is built in the same Taiwanese factory that builds Surly, Bianchi, etc etc etc.

I think they're made in Eugene. They have pictures of their staff, including brazers and TIG welders.
Hey! I see someone I know! That's pretty cool. He chased me down once to talk about my bike. :^)

I believe this is the bike Rivendell's Grant Petersen designed from the ground up for folks weighing 300 lbs or more. It's supposed to be strong enough to do the job, and comfortable/fun enough to ride everyday. Their test guy lost enough weight riding it that he didn't need it anymore.

Sorry to off topic tangent, just wondering how the build out was going. I haven't seen updates on it in a while. Can't wait to see the pics.

RonJon no update because I was waiting. No problems as I told the builder I would not need it until spring.. The frame is finished and is now at the painters. The final parts list is almost done. I can't wait!!!!

ebay new. It has a chro-molly frame with alex rims. When I started riding it, I was around 350 and I have
had no problems and wasn't afraid I would in terms of the wheels or the frame buckling...

and its over 1000 less than this...
