I gres up in LA and still have a soft spot for it--because it is, well, concrete proof that there is no such thing as "enough" road space for the desires of drivers. Funny how they're regretting having torn up the Pacific Electric system now, fif;ty years later...............................

Here in Toronto, we have a new Transit chief. at least on the political side, this young man, in his late 20's does not drive, period, he never bothered to get a licence, because, transit works well for him.

Here is what I would like to see, no more limos at city hall and no more prime parking spaces for council, give each council member a transit pass, see how fast they fix transit, when they are the one waiting for an hour in a downpour for a bus that is supposed to come every 5 minutes:D

Excellent wogsterca, excellent idea. Mandate all council members have to get around using transit.

I wonder if that type of citizen referendum would get enough signatures to go on the ballot, and hopefully pass, in the referendum happy city of Seattle?

Given this scenario, I think our mayor would just bike.

Steve Lopez had a recent column about the general outrage that some guy, maybe it was the guy in charge of transportation for the city, drives of all things a Hummer. Although that is quite outrageous, I think his Hummer is no bigger than a Suburban or a Yukon. But it's the principle.

The pain of traffic isn't enough because cars can still travel at 20 - 40 mph during rush hour. It's only when the average speed drops to 10-30 mph during rush hour that we'll start seeing light and commuter rail lines constructed. I suspect, this will happen in the next 50 years.

And once we fix transit, we take away the transit pass, and substitute a bicycle, I'll even be polite and suggest a nice Hybrid, instead of the 55LB Huffy :eek: I was thinking of at first. How fast do you think we would have a nice pair of bikeways one running East-West and another North-South, and bike lanes running everywhere, and properly designed ones too.
