Nah, starts way too early, and draws way too many people. I hear the starts are just crazy.

no..have done it the last few years...its a zoo...I almost got taken out last year but some dumb lady who not only stopped in the middle of everything, but then decided to get off her bike...
And they changed route..and its really seems lousy to me...nothing above wilshire...
I am passing...sorry...just not worth getting up at 3ish for a 24 mile ride

I rode the tandem with my wife in 1997. It was our first and last. I have no desire to do this ride.....just waaay too many kids and inexperienced riders on the road to enjoy a nice safe ride.

I will be trying it for the first time. I have heard about the craziness with all the riders, but I figure I have to try it at least once!

No rate the bike tour thread on this one?..Doesn't deserve a thread. Was the worst ride I have ever paid for. Matter of fact, it wouldnt have been worth it even if it was free!
You only get to ride about 40% of the ride. Crowded start? More like crowded the whole way. Right as we started rolling maybe 7 miles out, had to stop. Rt took us thru a small neighborhood street. Had to stop and walk the entire block before remounting. Sucked!
Then about 3 or 4 miles up the way, tun into a short steep hill. Couldn't ride up cause so many people coulnt make it so they'd jump off their bikes causing crash after crash. I think some lil kid nearly or maybe did break his wrist at that point. Then right as we get ready to roll again, the ride was over. Then stand in a LOOOOOOONG line of riders and bikes buming eachother for a lil medal!
Was not worth it at all. Not even a ride. Not even a casual ride! More like a walk thru the mall, crowded mall at Christmas time!
I only did it cause a couple of forum members came from Sacramento area and wanted us to do the ride with them. Cool guys, but no way jose, never again...cause of the ride, not the guys!:D

I've done it a couple times and it was very mediocre. I'm probably in Los Angeles that weekend visiting my parents, so I'll probably do it. The real challenge is avoiding contact with all the yahoos.

hmmm... I was going to do it, but doesn't sound too appealing based on all the feedback.

Would that have to be done with a briefcase full of Bolivian Marching Powder strapped to your back?

Doing it for the first time this year.
Actually talked my dad and borther into doing too....but that was before I read this thread :-o
Hope its a god experience....
Seriously though, is it so bad that I should be riding my backup bike ( to avoid damage to my new Bianchi?)

Who knows......you actually may end up having a good time with you family on this ride.....that's what this ride is all about. Be careful and be sure to give us a ride report! :)

Thanks! Will do. (with the three of us together we'll be better prepared to plow through the dummies :D
....I convinced my dad to fly in from Japan for this :o
(actually he comes to visit once in a while anyways but this time we scheduled around the ride)...I hope its fun!

Not that you need any more negative repsonses, but I agree, this ride is terrible. If you just want to say that you've done it, then I can understand but like others have said, it stinks.
You have to get up too early, way too many inexperienced/dangerous riders, too long a wait to start... just too many negatives really.
Me and a group of friends did it on beach cruisers and the pace was too slow for us.
I remember the water stops being the worst part of it. People would ride on the opposite side of the road, somehow not notice the stop, then cut over at the last second - without even looking back for other riders.
About the only thing good I had to say about it was the unique aspect of riding on streets (in a manner) which you normally never would.

The crowd can be so thick, it's actually a bit difficult to stick together. This year my wife and I decided to do it on a tandem to avoid being separated.

As an alternative, I would suggest the City of Angels ride on Sunday April 29th. Still a lot of people, but it's a fun time, a little longer and for a good cause.
The LAPD actually drives with the riders and blocks intersections all the way along to allow riders to ride through the streets all over downtown and around Griffith Park. I did it last year - it was my first ever organized ride and encouraged me to start riding organized centuries.

we did the volvo one, and hated the motor pace, was a total bottle neck on the hills.....

Yeah, definitely not a ride to do if you want to hammer. But I found it a nice ride and a cool way to see parts of the city I don't usually venture into.
Yes..that was the one cool thing...getting to ride down the middle of streets you never can..like La Cienega.. Fairfax..etc...but just too many people...
And then there is the long long walk at the end cause they dont let you ride on the campus...that is ever so much fun...like herding cattle...only they have bikes...
