About the ride: Rain cancels. The ride isn't too difficult so we may be up in time to take the early train back, but if not, there is a 7:00pm train out. We would then try to meet up with Danno and have dinner before boarding. Also, we will make stops along the way to refuel, etc. and I will stop for a quick bite (real food) at some point. I'll try and determine actual stops along the route, but anyone wanting to join, please note that there will NOT be a SAG vehicle on this ride. It is self-support only, so please bring fuel, extra tubes, cash, etc. There will be plenty of places to stop along the way should anyone need to at any time. I will provide my cell phone to all of you at the beginning of the ride.

About the train: The Surfliner normally accommodates bikes. However, there is a risk that the bikes will have to be stored in the luggage car and/or we may have to pay additional fees ($15), but this is rare. I do want those of you coming to be aware, however, and not be shocked should that happen. There are two trains to choose from: 4:29pm departure and a 7:00pm departure. Also, there are stations along the route should anyone want to come back earlier (please go to the Amtrak website for details). I'm sure most of you ride with ID, but please be sure to on Saturday as you will need it to board Amtrak.

I just did this route last Thursday (as far as Ojai, anyway), and highly recommend it. Very pretty, quite diverse... and challenging but not back-breaking.

Maybe this should've been called the Tour TO Santa B? :p

Not to speak for m.e. but I'm sure you're welcome to join us for our post-ride meal (and she's probably up for some recommendations of places to stop).

Extra incentive -- Danno can give a nutrition seminar at the end of the ride. He always has the best posts over on the training/nutrition board.

So,

Once we get there we need food right? Shall we assume mexican is the pick? If so I know JUST the place with amazing food and really great drinks! Hundreds of Tequilas, nice margaritas, and really good burritos! Its right off State Street.

Any other ideas riders?

CynCarvin32

It could be my second as well depending on what mother nature holds for tomorrow. I plan to get one in tomorrow but that could just mess me up for Saturday. So second or third 100 mile ride for me.... I'll live!

I will just get ME to come give my legs a massage before the ride :p

That way I wont hold the group up!

merider1
01-30-07, 02:43 PM
Eric, I charge $$ for massages...and leg massages even more. So, you'd better bring lots o' cash...:D

As for the idea of the restaurant, that sounds great! What is the name, so I can determine how far it is from the Amtrak station? We have to stay kind of close unless a) everyone brings lights in case it gets dark while we are eating (which it most likely will); or b) we just make sure we eat and get to Amtrak before it gets dark (which is possibly).

CynCarvin32
01-30-07, 02:53 PM
I forget the name actually for I just go there like a homing beakon when I am in Santa Barbara. I am getting the name soon and can call about making a reservation. There is ample bike space on their open patio so that works fine as well. It is not that far from the station if my memory serves me correctly!

So you DO give massages huh?? I will have to bring my holiday bonus LOL

See you Saturday Morning

I'm only bringing a rear blinkey so I'd like to kind of stay close to the Amtrak station. And if we're riding back on the 7:00 train it'll definitely be dark on the way to the station. I think the streets will be lit and safe enough to ride without headlights just to the station as long as we stay close to the station.

Of course this place is 1 blk off state street in the middle of state street so it wont be an issue for safety. I think we can even walk the bikes there if we really want to.. i mean riding under the influence is just no good!

Is this station just the station on state street down close to cabrillo? If so we are just fine.

Ok, here's the overall route-map for ya (someone mentioned they couldn't get the RouteSlip.com to work):
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/Cycling/VanNuysSB1.jpg

Here's the directions from hwy-150 once you get around Lake Casitas. I actually recommend going straight through Carpinteria and bypassing the beach-loop since it's very crowded there with lots of tourists and cars on weekends. There's a nicer beach route on a bike-path once you get to Santa Barbara (http://www.gururacing.net/artwork/santabarbara/):

lunch-stop in Santa Paula or Ojai

take hwy-150 around Lake Casitas towards the ocean

the hwy-192 turn-off is hard to spot. There's a long straight downhill with left-kink at Goobernador. Then another long flat/slight-downhill straight. It kinks left, hwy-192 forks right here. If you hop over a small bridge to the left, you missed the hwy-192 fork.

climb up hwy-192 to the right, you'll see some orchards on the right, then long downhill straight. Be careful of the sharp 90-degree turn at the bottom of the hill.

follow hwy-192 for another 4-5 miles

instead of turning left at 3-way stop at Casistas Pass Rd, continue onward to Linden Ave

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/Cycling/VanNuysSB2.jpg

left on Linden, go over freeway

right on Carpinteria Ave

right on Santa Ynez, go over freeway (this bypassed most of traffic at downtown Carpinteria)

after freeway overpass, left on Via Real at stop-sign

left at Padaro Lane and go under freeway, you'll see a trucker gas-station and a Corvette shop on the left side here

go on Padaro Lane about 2-3 miles, wave to Kevin Costner near the end as you climb up over freeway overpass

left on Via Real

continue through downtown Summerland

climb up Ortega Hill Rd

descent Ortega Hill Rd, watch out for sudden stop-sign at bottom of hill

left on N. Jameson Lane

left at Olive Mill Road, go over freeway

Olive Mill Road curves right at the Corral Casino and becomes Channel Drive (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/SantaBarbara/ButterflyBeachWestS.jpg)

Channel Drive curves right into Fairway Rd, stay on the left and take the bike-path up the hill

bike-path goes along top of cliff, then curves right and drops you back onto Channel Drive, which curves left at bottom of hill, you're about 10-15 minutes from end of ride here, so take it easy, warm-down and enjoy the scenery

at stop-sign, cross over E. Cabrillo Blvd and left onto bike-path (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/SantaBarbara/BikePath-Zoo.jpg) which goes around the bird-sanctuary and zoo

bike-path curves right at beach & volleyball courts, be careful of driveway going into zoo

bike-path stops at light at Milpas St. Cross left at light and pick up bike-path on beach side.

bike-path stops at State Street and Stearns Wharf, you're two blocks from the Amtrak station

go right at State Street two blocks, turn left after railroad-tracks into parking-lot of Amtrak station.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/Cycling/SantaBarbaraAttractions.jpg

A. Amtrak station
B. Open Air Bikes, if you're worried about putting bike in luggage compartment, you can get a bike-box from Open Air and remove the wheels & handlebars to pack it safely away. They also have bike-racks out front to lock up the bike and we can walk to the food joints.
C. Longboards Grill (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/SantaBarbara/SB-StearnsWharfFire.jpg) on the wharf is a good place for burger/fries, clam-chowder, fish & chips and the MEAN TAI! It's a mai-tai that'll kick yo arse! :)
D. Ty Warner Sea Centre, you can check out displays of sharks, octopus, etc.
E. Your Place is the best Thai food in town, might be a good place for dinner for the ones hopping on the 7pm train
F. Brophy Bros. has great seafood with a great view looking down over the marina (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/SantaBarbara/SB-Harbor.jpg).
G. Sharkeeeez on other side of freeway up State St. has Mexican food with usual bar drinks. If you've been to one Sharkeeez, you've been to them all.

All the above except for Your Place is within walking-distance from the Amtrak station. Some pictures of Santa Barbara (http://www.gururacing.net/artwork/santabarbara/). I'll check with ME to see what your schedule is and meet you somewhere. Depending upon your time-schedule on the ride-itself, I may meet you in Carpinteria and ride back to S.B. or I may just meet you at the end for food & DRINKS! See ya!
