Road Bike Racing - Poweragent is available for the Mac now--send me a file!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Can anyone send me a powertap data file I can review? I just downloaded the poweragent software that's now out for the mac and I just want to check it out.

I think that tax refund might end up going to a PT--we'll see.

Cool. Thanks!

Where were you on the ride this morning? 35 degrees, raining, no sun... good times.

It actually ended up being a good ride--4 of us (3 4's and a 5) rode out to Great Falls and back instead of the usual route. Experienced mild frostbite on my wang for the first time. Got sleeted on toward the end of the ride. Fun stuff. :D

Now if only there were a Mac version of CyclingPeaks, I'd be set. For the time being, I have to buy an operating system I only need for one purpose and run it through Boot Camp, at exorbitant cost for the OS.

I was with the fiancee and the bridesmaids discussing dresses. Loads of fun.

Thanks--there will be no laughing. I'm sure there'll be tears if I ever find out what kind of wattage I'm producing...

(edit)hmm... any chance that was a crit? ;)

Hmm.. not in full definition. "40km" (37 measured) road race, 4 laps.

Lap 1 lasted 13:55
Lap 2 lasted 14:40
Lap 3 lasted 13:27
Lap 4 lasted 12:22

Placed third.

Dr. Pete - keep us all posted on the results of the Mac software. This is to generate graphs/data from Powertap data, correct?

DrPete
01-29-07, 03:42 PM
Yeah, it is.

Thanks to all for the files--All in all the software seems well-designed. I guess it's Java-based for cross-platform capability, but it runs quickly on my Powerbook G4 (1.25 GHz, 1 GB RAM).

In terms of functionality vs. cyclingpeaks I can't really speak intelligently about it because I haven't used cyclingpeaks.

One thing that immediately jumps out is the disconnect between HR and power, but that's not news.

Overall it seems like a pretty solid product, and a definite selling point for a mac user like myself. It's nice to see a company acknowledge that (ARE YOU LISTENING, POLAR???!!!).

A screenshot of an early-season ride, kindly posted by someone. ;)

You're killing me DP.

Is this your SPMPSEMDLBS (Secret Plot to Make Pcad Spend Even More Dough @ the LBS)? PowerTap. Sometimes I think that place has a PowerTap into my friggin wallet.

We're all Macs here. So the last remaining possible reason to buy a Windows machine has now been eliminated (besides MS Flight Simulator I mean). Actually since you can install Windows on these new Macs, strike that. There IS no remaining reason.

Of course installing a Windows on a Mac would be like putting a kickstand on a Serotta. Forgive me for even suggesting the possiblity, it will never happen again. I wonder how many Windows weenies are lining up in the cold to buy a Windows Vista 'upgrade'? Don't bother, save yourself the grief. Buy a whole new computer. Be sure it has 2GB of RAM if you want to run the full-boat bells/whistles version of W.V. (the one that's the dead Mac OS X knock off) and a 2.5Ghz or faster Intel processor. Maybe they make a version of Vista that a Cray mainframe can run. That might have enough horsepower.

Between that nifty new Zune player and Vista, MS is really hitting on all cylinders. Hey, MS still has about 50-70% more revenue than Apple. Of course 8 years ago they had about 400% more revenue. Stay tuned. Apple will catch MS in revenues and surpass them by 2012. You read it here first.

But I love Microsoft. Office rocks. Without it Macs would be paperweights in a Windows world. Nobody understands that better than I do. The computer business is very tough. It changes so fast nobody can really keep up forever. Gates & Co. have had an astonishing run. But Microsoft isn't the 800lb. gorilla they used to be if you hadn't noticed. They used to be feared and respected. Now they're just respected. The fear is gone.

And if you don't like that go Google yourself.

When I go on a pro-Mac anti-Windows tirade like the one above specifically hoping to get some Windows weenies cranked up - and NOTHING happens - well then woe unto Windows weenies everywhere.

What a sad day.

Macs are being assimilated into the Gates World. It's already been accepted.

It's okay though, we don't mind you coming over to our side. We've been waiting for you.

The article extrapolates predictions based on the assumption that nothing, at all, will change between now and 2010. Hardly worth my consideration.

Prediction: The iPhone will be to business users what the iPod was to the home/recreational user. That'll change the ballgame significantly.

The Ipod has a big advantage over other Mpeg3 players because of its easy interface with Itunes and the I store. Thus Ipod is killing things like Zune in the marketplace, even though it's overpriced, and not significantly better.

The I phone, which has to interact with Cingular is not going to have the same sort of clear advantage over competitors. Difficult to believe that Sprint, etc. will not have comparable competing devices.

Besides it has a 5 hour battery. I could not survive in Business travel with a phone with a 5 hour battery.

I wouldn't bet that anything "I" will not be a success, but I doubt the I phone will be the runaway sucess amongst Business users that the Ipod is amongst teeanagers.

I should qualify my statement--the 2nd generation iPhone will be a big hit. ;)

Wanted to revive this thread rather than start a new one...

I just got myself a PT, and am wondering what people think about Poweragent vs. Cycling Peaks? If cycling peaks really is that much better, I'll finally break down and install Windows on my Macbook... but I'd rather not.

Opinions? Dr. Pete- are you still rocking Poweragent? Or perhaps you never did actively rock it?

(plus everyone can weigh in on the iPhone predictions... how exciting!)

Cyclingpeaks is the one and only software I'd use for the powertap. If you don't have software that gives you normalized power and TSS, you're short changing your benefits of a powermeter.

yeah. it's an overpriced piece of software, especially with their irritating one-computer license, but it's still a necessary purchase.
