I don't usually mess with Japanese components, but I came by this really clean 531 Ted Williams Free Spitit from Sears recently for cheap, and decided to see what I could put together for fun from what I had around. Frame, headset, bottom bracket (except for replacing spindle) and deraillers are original. Seat, seatpost, brakes (with a little filing of the front slots to get the shoes low enough) crank, handlebars, stem and toeclips and straps from my piles of junk, pedals and shiftlevers from ebay. Wheels came from a Raleigh Pro I bought but weren't the right wheels, so were replaced. Need to find some toptube brake cable clamps that aren't Campagnolo (too valuable) or Huret (too small).

Doesn't look bad at all. A bit odd in the way of color schemes (the red pantographed components are a tad out of place), but a very nice effect overall - considering the junk these things sported stock.

Nice job.

Take care,
