Hi all,
Please forgive me if this subject has been previously covered... I can find similar topics but I was hoping to get this spelled out for my own dumb self.

I am currently working with a quill stem for the first time and I am having height adjustment issues.
I am using a 100mm Nitto Technomic stem in a new IRO cycles 'Angus' track frame (size 56 cm). The issue I'm having isn't in getting the stem out (as seems more common) but actually getting the stem in far enough. The stem will insert past the 'minimum insertion' indicator, however, only by a few (2 or 3) centimeters approx.
To give a rough guide, when the stem is inserted as far as it seems to want to go, the wedge seems to be approx only half way down the head tube.
Is this common? Does anyone think that I have irregularities in my frame? I've had a look down there with a torch and there is certainly nothing visible (to my untrained eye... but I've had a good look)
Is it wise to try to force the stem in with a hammer etc... ( I don't think so).

Are Nitto Technomic stems made with a more upright riding position in mind, and therefore, I just need to purchase a stem with a more shallow 'root'?

I thank you all for your time with my rather painfull and generally 'newb-like' question.

regards Jared

Most fork tubes either are thicker walled or sleeved on the bottom half to add extra strength to where the fork crown attatches. So, yes, 2-3 cm past the minimum insertion line is normal, especially if you have a smaller sized frame with a short head tube.

Your problem isn't uncommon with Technomic stems. Nitto Technomic stems are kind of a specialized component for raising the handlebars higher than would be otherwise possible. The shaft that extends into the steerer tube is about twice as long as most other stems.

According to Ben's Cycle (http://www.benscycle.com)* the Nitto Technomic has a quill length of 225mm, whereas the Nitto Deluxe has a quill length of 105mm and the Nitto Pearl has a quill length of 70mm. Maybe you can exchange your Technomic for another of Nitto's stems? Good luck.

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you guys. but thanks.

After much deliberation (only possible after reading your advice) I got out the grinder and shortened the Technomic.

I am happy with the result... the stem sits where I want it and my riding position is spot on.

Next time, I'll buy the right stem for the job.
Lesson Learned.

cheers

With my short head tube, I also had to chop like a couple of inches of quill off my Technomic stem.
