How much clearance should there exist between your foot at the 3 o'clock (horizontal) position and the front wheel if it is turned. Granted, most of the time the front wheel will be straight. Over the weekend when I was riding slow and talking with someone walking, I turned around on my bike and just happened to notice that the tire and my foot just barely missed each other. Of course, as long as they miss, I guess that's okay.

mkwdrs: It's OK even if there is some overlap. You just have to be mindful of the overlap if you're turning around. Under normal riding conditions you won't have to worry about it.

I have a bike like that. Fairly agressive geometry and straightish fork plus big feet. I just have to remember that when I'm trackstanding at a stop light. It's not a big deal otherwise.

There have been many posts about this issue in the past. Use the search engine to find the threads.

I think that overlap is OK. During a normal ride, your wheel will not turn that far to where it becomes a problem. I suppose it could be a bigger issue on fixed gear bikes. Luckily, in 3 o'clock position, the tire misses the tip of my shoe by about 3 milimeters.

Here's a pic of Lance Armstrong's new bike; lots of overlap.

Try again. For some reason the post didn't pick up the whole URL. I edited shrimpx's post and it should work for you now.

It worked fine for me. Gee, Lance rides a trek? Now I'll have to have one. - Ted
