Classic & Vintage - How much is this Sturmey Archer AW worth? Pics.

I just went to an estate sale and bought a few boxes of bike parts and this Sturmey Archer Hub was in there. I have no interest in using it so I'm selling it on Ebay. I'd like to put a Buy it Now for a fair price so I can sell it quickly but the ones there now vary from $9 to $42 plus shipping for identical hubs so I have no idea what is fair for this.

The owner passed away so all I know is what I see since I don't know how to function test it. It is well lubricated. It came in a plastic bag that had oil in it that had dripped out fo the hub. I wiped it clean and it looks good. The oil is clean and new smelling. The sprocket feels pretty stiff when I spin it with my hands though. Normal? Maybe it needs adjustment?

The hub pictures better than real life. It looks almost perfect if it weren't for the nuts but it does have a few tiny little specks of surface rust on it and three scratches about 1/8" long each. There are 18 holes per side.

The shifter moves fine but I don't know anything about them to judge its proper operation. The othe side of the shifter is chrome with little specks of rust.

The cable moves in and out of the hub by hand and the spring tension keeping it in feels strong.

These bands were in the bag with the hub but I have no idea if they are needed but the round one does have Sturmey Archer stamped on it and it has a little chip as you can see.

Put it up for auction, disclose what you know, shipping is about $8 sent priorty mail in prepaid box (hub is heavy weighs over 2lbs) and sell! You'll get what the buyer thinks its worth. I have gotten $12 and $18 for the two that auctioned. I did not include shifters or clips. YMMV & good luck!

It is also a later one which IMHO is not quite as desirable as the earlier ones. When someone is restoring a English bike they like to try and get the parts as close to the original age as possible...at least I do.

I thought someone here once said the later models are more desirable because there was a slight redesign that gave them less slippage when engaging a gear and they could take more punishment than earlier models.

Anyone remember that or can verify it?

Don't have the energy to dig, but check Sheldon's site.

The clip with the wheel hets mounted on the frame and is used to change the direction of the gear cable at a tube juncture. The other clip goes on either the top tube or the down tube. It holds the cable casing securely (see where the black cable housing is sort of kinked?), so that the wire inside can move. Without one, you can play with the trigger all you want, but the bike won't shift gears.

I remember it but I think it occurred later on around 1984 or so. I have couple of 1980 hubs and they don't have the upgraded pawls in them.

A '78 would have neither the tougher internals of a pre-1960 model nor the "No Neutral" of the current models. Not particularly desirable, though it helps that it's a 36 holer.

The teardrop shaped clip is called a "Fulcrum Clip". There should be a little plug that fits under the protrusion and acts as a cable stop. Older ones were metal, but plastic since sometime between '60 and '72. The plastic gets brittle with age. A friend just had them reproduced in stainless steel, along with reproductions of the older steel pulleys. http://www.home.earthlink.net/~steinborn/gentlemancyclistmerchandise.htm
