Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

That looks interesting. I may have to put the 34T chainring back on for that ride :D

I almost threw up just thinking about all that climbing.

Life imitates avatars? ;)
If I go there, I'd probably do the easier century. 6,000 feet of climbing on a century ride is plenty - and Look cleats don't work too well when you're pushing your bike up a 23% grade. :D

Rode the 'Lowlander' route last year pacing a friend. I used to live atop 1 of the longer climbs. (3 years ago)
Good fun, great scenery. Bagpipers playing on Bopple Hill, the steepest of the pitches. Paint and chalk all over the road. Lots of riders.
Will be doing the Highlander version of it this year.

Lots of folks change out the rear for a mtb style cluster or / and ride a triple. Each hill on its own isn't a problem... its the string of them in the middle of the ride that makes it difficult.
Last year I rode 34/29. Probably would have made the steepest pitch - I've done it before on a MTB as I lived just up the road.
BF Highlander ride?
I might be able to arrange camping and a bonfire right off the course at my old residence...

Think a 34/27 would be adequate for someone who's 5'6" and (should be) around 140 pounds (by then)?
Most climbing I've done so far was 4,000 feet in 60 miles.....but that also included a good 24 miles of downhill/soft pedaling for a fairly continuous stretch. It was a real ass kicker in parts, but I was also 165 pounds and carrying 4 water bottles on that ride :)
I'm around 150 pounds now, and if I stay on target, I should be 140 by June for the Housatonic Hills Road Race. How are the climbs on that century.....I wish there was a course map w/ elevations.
Here is the link to the NJ Randonneurs event calendar.

I've done plenty of 10k ft+ centuries (39-23 ;) ) . Very fun. Looks like a super long drive for that ride, though. I can do that kind of climbing around here and it's free.

At Highlander time last year I was 178 and rode the lowlander version in a 34x29. I think I used the 29 in the last 20 miles for 2 climbs.
You should be fine... on the worst of the climbs (omitted from the version I've done, but ridden by me at other times on my MTB getting to some trails) people will zig zag on the road.
OK...Shore Cycle CLub has an easy to "build" Century in May, on the 12th this year...no Mothers day guilt for those w/mothers ! It's in three "loops" starting at Batsto in the Pine Barrens of Southern NJ! Do 1, 2, 3 w/each being about 30+ miles! K

Narragansett Bay Wheelmen (nbwclub.org) in RI have a couple.
May 20 Plymouth Century Seekonk, MA 21/56/100 (Done the 56, pretty flat, with relatively good roads).
July 1 Century of the Century URI Kingston 18/35/55/75/100--Never done it.
They also have a "Flattest Century in the East" in early September with about 2,000 entries (pre-registration required and supported).
They haven't released their late summer/fall rides yet so they will probably add one more before the TFCE and it may be the South Shore Century. (Done this and it is great. The one drawback is they send you down scenic dead-ends/cul-de-sacs...) They have a couple of other options.

Not my club!! I'm currently riding w/Pine Barren Peddlers (among others!), but this one is on our list of To Do's. I will check out your ride too....don't think I have anything on that date....sooo....I will also forward you info to the rest of our group...plus mention it at our meeting next week! As far as T's...our plans this year are to do fairly generic...for sponsors and for "advertising" when NOT on our bikes....seems more cost effective than having jerseys w/past dates..... See you on the road! Karin
