A couple of friends and I were chatting and wanted a "complete" list of centuries in the area.

I told one I would post here and ask the helpful folks on BF to help complete. I did not include rides for which there is no date set. If you have a sentence or two about the ride, that would help.

January

February

March

April
4/28 PSP Metric Century, Hershey, PA (It's a metric century, but is a really nice early season supported ride. Plus, the routes are divided into two separate loops; turning the ride into a full century would be easy to do. Registration is available online via Active.com, or mail-in from the downloadable registration form on the website.) Let Beth know if you are going. (below)

May
5/6 Five Boro Bike Tour (honorary mention 'cause it is huge)

5/12 Quad County Metric. From scenic Green Lane Park, Green Lane, PA, ride 21, 31, 45, 53, 68, or 76 miles at your own pace on low-traffic back roads. The 21-mile route avoids the longest climb and is suitable for casual riders. (Post #19 for details)

5/20* 5BBC Montauk Century (flat and very well supported, fun ride.)
5/20 Bloomin' Metric, up to 100k; East Norwalk Ct. Beeyutiful ride. Wish it didn't conflict with Montauk for the second consecutive year. http://www.soundcyclists.com/Bloomin.htm

June
6/2 "Get Ready Metric", (2) 50km loops from Fort Mott (Pennsville/Salem City) NJ $19

6/20 Hat City Cyclists Century, Bethel, Ct. http://www.hatcitycyclists.org/cycle...efest2006.html

September

9/9 Transportation Alternatives' NYC Century (the only 100% urban Century -- a lot of stop and go makes this a harder ride than the flat terrain would suggest. A real good time.)

NYCC's Escape NY Century, usually in September/October. Starts at Sakura Park on Riverside Dr. and goes into Jersey/Rockland. http://www.nycc.org/rides_eny.shtml That's last years date, so plan accordingly.

Pumpkin Patch Pedal in early October in central Jersey. It's put together by SIBA. Here's (http://www.sibike.org/ppp.html) a link to last year's ride.

In mid-September is the Golden Apple ride (http://www.westchestercycleclub.org/goldenapple/) in Westchester County, NY.

The PPP is flatter and easier; the Golden Apple more difficult.

I doubt I'll be in shape for it this Aug. That may be my training goal for '08.

yeah, I DNF'ed the ride in 2006. Word to the wise for this one: pay attention to your cue sheet! Seriously, the sheet's like, "L at stone hut" "R at fork (unsigned road)" Part of the reason why I DNF'ed was that I went seriously off-course twice, with each deviation incorporating an unnecessary 500-1000 ft. descent on a 10-12% grade and just lost too much energy in getting back on track.

The first checkpoint for the course was supposed to close 3.5 hours after ride start. We got there half an hour past closing and were surprised to see that it was still open. The staff mentioned that during the closing time, less than half of the riders had arrived because we were all just scattered around the forest.

all that said, even with the DNF, it was a ton of fun and an utterly gorgeous ride.

do you ever head up to river road?I am ashamed to admit I don't even know what River Road is.

I ride back and forth from South Slope/Gowanus to Harlem M-F and when it is warmer, if I have extra time in the morning, I ride the hills around 125th Street and Riverside/Broadway. That and the Brooklyn Bridge are the only hills I see unless I head out to Long Island on the weekend.

that's a healthy commute every day.

river road is great and offers some good climbing. it's right off the GW bridge on the new jersey side. i think there are 7 main hills along the stretch, ending with a mile long climb to the police station. the serious guys will do hill repeats out there, but a simple out and back ride is fairly challenging.

Suburban Cyclists Unlimited (www.suburbancyclists.org) offers two of the best run rides around the Mid-Atlantic region.
(1) May 12, 2007, Quad County Metric. From scenic Green Lane Park, Green Lane, PA, ride 21, 31, 45, 53, 68, or 76 miles at your own pace on low-traffic back roads. The 21-mile route avoids the longest climb and is suitable for casual riders. The longer routes are on rolling to hilly terrain. The 53- and 76-mile routes include the 8-mile "Intensive Climbing Unit" extra- hilly segment with 1,200 ft additional climbing. A flat 10-mile ride on the unpaved Perkiomen Trail is also available.
(2) August 27, 2007, Lake Nockamixon Century. From Warrington, PA, ride 25, 50, 75, or 100 miles on rolling terrain with a few hills. A hilly 107-mile Intensive Climbing Unit century route is also being offered. All riders will visit picturesque Lake Galena in Peace Valley Park. 50-to-100-mile riders will also visit our well-stocked rest stop at scenic Lake Nockamixon.

And don't forget the classic Central Bucks Bike Club's Covered Bridges Ride, in mid-October. Enjoy the beautiful foliage of Central and Upper Bucks County, PA, and travel through up to six historic covered bridges. Don't let the ~2,800 riders worry you: with five routes (63, 50, 33, 30 and 20 miles), the roads aren't crowded. (http://www.cbbikeclub.org/?body=covered_bridge_ride&nav=cbr&PHPSESSID=ebb865ff533c6487f46c7802c1236f0c)

Incidentally, one of the most comprehensive and up-to-date lists of events is maintained by the SCU webmaster, so you might want to check there occasionally.

I could quit early one Friday, ride north, cross GWB, hit that and then just head home.

Cyclists don't pay for the bridge do they?

ps, I should have said thanks... It is about 14 miles each way if I don't add anything on like the hills. (Most days I ride Riverside Dv instead of the Greenway north of 79th. More hills.) But this time of year, I get on the bikepath on the way home as soon as possible. It is dark out there at 7pm.

I hate to be picky, but that is NOT "River Road." That's the Henry Hudson Drive in the Palisades State Park.

River Road is a suck-ass heavily trafficked road that goes from Hoboken to the start of the Henry Hudson Drive.

The MS Century goes up the Henry Hudson; there's 6000 ft of elevation on that ride... that is, if you believe Delorme Topo. ;)

i don't think too many people are averaging over 15 in this wind. it's been brutal lately. i was riding this morning and felt my legs burning and i was getting tired. however, i was only barely passing joggers. looking down at the speedometer i saw a dreadfully low speed of 13. urg!

anyway, slvoid, i may be around on sunday. the only issue is that i have a house warming party to go to saturday night, which may involve a few drinks, so early sunday morning may be tough.

So how do you get from GWB to the "Henry Hudson Drive in the Palisades State Park." And is there any issue with riding it that Ishouldbe aware of? We close a little early today, so I might try and hit that.

I've never ridden over the GWB on my bike. Any advice? And once on the other side, how hard is it to get to the HH Drive?

I started to gmap it but it is not obvious what I do... Is the better ride the part north of the bridge or south?

this is a really good resource here for over the bridge rides:

http://www.roberts-1.com/bikehudson/r/nyc/adventures_gwb/index.htm

in particular, you can follow this cue sheet if you want to check out the palisades park (the hill climbing i was talking about):

http://www.roberts-1.com/bikehudson/r/r/m_nyack/cue_sheet/index.htm

just ignore variation A and B and that will tell you how to get into the park.

Follow the bike path past the Little Red Lighthouse, thn go up, up, up - past the bridge, over the AMTRAK Bridge, under the Overpass, until you see a pedestrian bridge at 182nd Street - right where the retaining wall collapsed onto the Henry Hudson Parkway a couple of uears ago.

Then take 182nd up to Cabrini (you're almost at the highest point in Manhattan) then hang a right down to the bridge. Turn west, go a couple of blocks (against traffic) and use the pedestrian Path on the south side of the bridge.

Once you exit the bridge take a left. The southbound side of River Road (Rte 505) will bear sightly right and then take a steep downhill towards the river. Don't take it too fast because the entrance to Palisades Park is on the left. Look for a big brown park sign.

How far up do you need to go for it to be 6000 feet of climbing?? I confess I haven't made my up there yet, I'm a little confuzzled about where exactly the ride goes after the GWB.

Is it what google maps has as "Henry Hudson Drive" along the river?

I was a DNF too and agree about the route: I was expecting a marked route- and thus had no maps- and got lost several times in the first few miles. I have trouble following cue sheets anyway and these were hard at first. And sometimes I never quite knew if I was ever on route until a point three turns down the list. Wasn't expecting nor did I know that this was a brevet.(or what a brevet type ride was) Missed all times.

It is some of the best riding territory around and I did OK until the third big climb (the one with the horses on top) and then it wasn't fun anymore. I took Rte 12 down to Rte 2 and returned to Deerfield and recovered nicely enough to extend the ride along the Connecticut River a little just to say I got 100.

I took my MTB with 1.5 slicks and next year I might put 28s on the road bike and try that. And I will take local maps.
