...change bikes on Stage 17? I'm watching the stage now and it doesn't look like there was anything wrong with the bike...

Maybe the saddle was rubbing his testosterone patch the wrong way.

I was thinking all that water and sweat rusted out his chain.

Is that the part where he got off and threw the bike down? If so, he had a flat tire.

Yeah I think that's it, then he yelled at the mechanic pushing him.

I think Robbie said the next day that it was a broken spoke.

I remember Phil speculating it was a broken spoke as well. It was neat to watch because Floyd was so nonchalant about it. Wonder if this clip is online anywhere.

My recollection is broken spoke. But I will say that what I most remember is the complete freak out I had when I saw him just drop that $Upteenthousand work of art on the side of the road while waiting to get a new bike. He clearly believes it's not about the bike ;)

Robbie Ventura, Floyd's coach, ex-Postie. He was in the booth with PP&B during a couple of the stages to discuss Floyd's tactics, power, hip, etc (maybe only in the evening recap versions). He has a Carmichael-esqe on-line coaching/training business.

It was a broken spoke.

If I was on the side of the road when he threw it down I would grabbed it and rode it like I stole it! :D

I vaguely recall reading an ex pro's account of a mechanical he had. Apparently something broke off, rear dérailleur maybe. A fan picked it up and started to hand it back to him....the pro looked at him like he was nuts. It's not as if he was going to put it back on.

WTF? If ANYTHING breaks off of a pro's bike, not to mention a TdF "winner's" bike, it's worth thousands!
