General Cycling Discussion - Good lord, wtf is this?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Someone trying to fix a problem the hard way.
Great video. Remember the olden days when everyone rode horses for leisure? This guy should have tried a Brooks saddle before going through all that trouble.
It reminds me of the Powerloader from Aliens.

"Share the road with hyperbikes". Right. Why isn't it a tricycle? Does the third wheel not count because it's not always touching the road?

wow, imagine one of those things clogging the weekend crowd on the MUP- its like a rabid transformer!
I am bike man meets Leonardo DeVinci.
Nooo! He's eliminated the only good thing about dicycles (http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/TRANSPORT/diwheel/diwheel.htm), the runaway hamster wheel effect!

Wow that's strange. But after all, any cyclist will tell you the worst thing about bicycling is the seat. I mean, these seats are torture!

One set of 170mm cranks for me and two pair of 40mm cranks for Bailey?
Never mind.........I honestly think it's too tall to get into my garage.
I will have to show this to some of my VC buddies. This must get funded. :D  :roflmao: :roflmao:
I heard that thing about the seat... and if that is such a big deal... well, there are always 'bents.
It looks interesting, but I have no clue how I would transport what looks to me like a power loader from Aliens 2 in a normal vehicle.

I'm not sure I'd trust a 4 spoke wheel ;)

LOL.. that thing is a death trap.
Click on the "more information" link, it's supposed to be geared 4:1 so you can go up to 50mph...

I just did that. ....it is too tall to get in my garage. It needs almost as much room as my car to store it.
All that can be wrong with a human powered vehicle, or an exercise machine, is wrong with this thing. And more.
50 mph = I have a nice bridge for sale. It 's near you. I'll give you a good deal. :D
"Three prototypes and looking for a partner". = I ran out of money and need more stuff to play with.
His wife is gonna be pissed when she finds out he spent his entire trust fund on three of those things.

Looks more like a kinetic sculpture than a viable means of transportation.

I just realized what will happen if that thing gets going too fast backwards, downhill. !!
If you slam on the brakes too hard, the whole thing will flip over backwards. The front wheel will go up over the top and now be on the other side. You will be upside down. Really ! :roflmao:
No wonder they stopped making those the first time, around the turn of the century.
What's up with the duct tape repair on the wheels?
I mean, I like duct tape too, but come on!
This stability is reinforced by both the frames' broad base, formed by the canted wheels, and by the power of the centrifugal force of the spinning wheels, pushing down on the road
Where did this guy learn physics?
The conventional bicycle is unstable and dangerous on the road.
So that's why we fall down ten times during a ride?
9) COLLAPSABLE
Hmm...sorry, I don't see this fitting into the back of my SUV
2) TURBINES in place of or paired with brakes will transform friction from stopping into electricity stored in cells to be used at crucial points as when restarting a hill ascent.
Turbines??? Powered by...I thought we were using MUSCLE power, here!
I could go on, but I have to get back to the real world.

The problem with the bicycle is it's supposed to replace the horse; everybody knows riding a bike takes no effort.
And my contraption fixes that, it takes alot of effort. But...I see it replacing the car which... takes a lot of effort to operate?
"Where did this guy learn physics?" I'm guessing Hollywood Upstairs Physics Academy?
Nice find slvoid.

Imagine a fixed gear version on downhills:
"The driver twists his torso, contracts the stomach and back muscles, and alternately extends the arms up and down as in a foot pedal motion, while coordinating with the legs "

He was all over the road. It looks like steering comes from differential force to one wheel or the other, so you are constantly battling to apply the same pressure with your left arm and leg as you do with your right just to keep it in a straight line.
This has to be one of the stupidest designs I've ever seen.

This guy is trying to solve a problem that bents already address! I agree, the guy doesn't know his physics. He states that it's stable because the center of gravity is below the axles, but the axles don't matter; what matters is the COG in relation to the track width. Likewise, the lateral COG is between the two main wheels, so the front wheel is almost useless. I hope he doesn't expect that front wheel to do the steering!
50 mph? Give me a break! With that frontal area, he'd be working hard to hit 20 mph.
I was waiting for a 'bent rider to chime in on this one...
Hey wow. This guy is right down the road from me. Maybe I can schedule a test roll

They used a mtb fork. Unfortunately, they forgot to put a wheel on the back too, so the thing is in a perpetual state of wheelie, even at 2mph.

Do you think the lady in that picture is wearing a wetsuit in case the hole thing roles down the beach and into the ocean?
Seriously though, I mean, how can we let people ride around on simple machines like bicycles? Seems like we can come up with something a little more complicated than that stoneage invention that seems to have outlasted every other harebrained design. :)
Oh, is that the sound of butting in I hear? Must be little Lisa Simpson! Springfields answer to a question NOBODY ASKED!
Seriously want to see this guy climb a hill on this thing. Seriously want to see the guy go down the other side of a big hill on this thing. Heck, I'd even like to see him try single track on this thing, oops, oh that is right, the wonder wheel doesn't do single track, my bad.

The Embrio is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, a technology that creates power by mixing hydrogen and oxygen, ideally resulting in water as the only exhaust. Carmakers are also developing this technology for automobiles, and General Motors (nyse: GM - news - people ) stands by its plan to sell hydrogen cars by 2010.
The Embrio also borrows several other advanced technologies from cars, like infrared night vision and an active suspension, which can vary its damping rates based on road conditions. Its riding position resembles that of a motorcycle, and it balances one or more passengers with a network of sensors and gyroscopes. To move the Embrio, you use an accelerator trigger on the left handlebar and a brake trigger on the right.
The vehicle is made of lightweight materials, like aluminum, magnesium and nylon. It weighs only 360 pounds.
Forbes Fact
Although Bombardier says the gyroscopes are enough to balance the Embrio, the vehicle is also kept longitudinally stable by a smaller wheel that operates like an airplane's landing gear. It touches the ground when the vehicle is stopped or just starting. Once the Embrio is in motion, the landing gear will retract when the vehicle reaches about 12 mph. During braking, the gear redeploys when the vehicle slows to 12 mph.

Sorry, Curtis. Looks interesting, but I don't think it fits my state's definition of a bicycle, so wouldn't be street legal.
Besides, I don't think it would tow a canoe.
