Would anyone recommend Mavic X221 rims?

You forgot to add "for downhill runs" As you stated in the mechanics forum.:)
Niothing wrong with them just for riding on.

They're nice lightweight XC rims, kind of an older design. Use them for downhill? You'll destroy them in the first 100 feet.

You'll be installing them on a lightweight hardtail, right? ;)

That's a complete crock of feces.

(I have years of hard miles, including many, many DH runs on tech terrain, on Mavic 317s[same rim as the X221s])

Consider yourself lucky, a skilled rider, or both. x221 rims are not downhill spec.

I've owned a set of wheels built with them (221) for almost ten years, and while I'm happy with their XC performance, there are many, many better rims out there for DH/freeride use/abuse.

Well what else would be good I'd prefer not breaking the banks!

Well what type of riding will you be doing? What is your definition of 'downhill runs'?

That's obvious, but quite different than claiming "Use them for downhill? You'll destroy them in the first 100 feet."

There are more factors than simple rim weight when evaluating whether a wheel will be more, or less, durable. Spoke tension, lacing, flange diameter, tire size/volume/sidewall construction and amount of suspension travel all play a part.

There's 169 people who feel more or less the same way I do about the X221 over at MTBR.com

3.1 out of 5 is nothing to be proud of.

and you haven't done 100 feet of downhill in that time? Weird.

Really?

Yep. x221. Good XC rim. Poor DH rim.

Isn't it? Seventeen years and I've only ridden uphill.

To the original poster, these wheels are a better choice for your intended use:

I don't know what kind of balls or skills you ride with but have a look at this...

Taken from my box of busted & smashed parts box:)
Yep, it was a NEW rim about 2 or so months old.
Not a 221 but a 138 happened about 7 or 8 years ago.
& yes , spokes(15ga/32 hole) were properly tensioned
Careful what you use for ballsy drops & downhill flights.
luckily i only got a busted finger out of that deal.
the crappy pic by my thumb is was the pinned joint...
