Bicycle Mechanics - Bicycle Wheel Building Video

Anybody watch/use this video "Bicycle Wheel Building 101 (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=11049&subcategory_ID=4221)"? If so, how helpful is it for a newbie wheel builder? I know there are several excellent books and online references but I learn so much easier visually.

FWIW - My goal is to true my own wheels and eventually build a set. I can wrench my own bikes (3 builds) and only rely on my LBS to true/rebuild wheels and headsets pressed.

Built my own with Sheldon's excellent page as my only resource. I think you'll be fine. All you really need is an attention to detail and patience.

I have about 2000 miles on my first build and used Sheldon's site primarily. The video can't hurt though. You might try these sites for further reading and don't be shy about asking around here. There seem to be plenty of wheel heads with enough experience to help you over any rough spots.

yep, I've built 3 wheels using sheldon's stuff. I can't say I was wildly successful initially in terms of tensioning properly (no guage) but after a couple adjustements on the first two they've been holding up great. The third one, which I built some time later, went off without a hitch.

FWIW, my attention to detail is pretty bad. Well it's not that I don't try, I just get frustrated with crap and become careless.

Let me add yet another endorsement of Sheldon's instructions. I have built several sets of wheels using only his instructions with excellent results.

I saved a buncha' money, too! :D

Another happy graduate of the Sheldon Brown School of Wheelbuilding. Four years and a dozen sets of wheels, tho I did have the LBS check & critique the first few sets.

I also downloaded Roger Musson's Wheelbuilding, 3rd Ed. (http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/wheelbuilding/book.php), which I think is extraordinarily well organized, beautifully illustrated, and fills in a lot of details.

ditto on the sheldon brown. I have built about 3 or 4 wheels out of all second hand components (including pre wobbled rims and 'prestressed' spokes...) and they all held out reasonably well. my first all new components wheel, carefully built with his page in front of me just held out bombproof over a 550km bob equipped tour (1/2 dirt) in the tasmanian wilderness.
i've found in the past that the bob is pretty tough on the rear wheel especially with several days food on the rough stuff so i was very pleased with how it all went. incidentally my tour partner who always insists on 'factory built wheels' as being superior to 'shop built' (??) bunged about 5 spokes. in total i must have spent a good 5 hours creekside rebuilding his wheel for him afterwards.
