Bicycle Mechanics - Will 7 spd. shifter/cassette index to a 10 spd. rear der?

Hey,

I have a 7 spd. cassette working with a Shimano 105 10 spd. rear der, with barcon friction shifting. All works well. If I go to a 7 spd. index shifter rather than friction, will it index properly to the 10 spd. rear der/7 spd. cassette set-up?

Thanks!

Yes

It is in the shifter pull. The ratios are what matters. Since your cassette matches your shifters it will work.

I don't know much about this stuff, but I do know that I have a 9sp RD on my bike with a 7sp cluster, the LBS just adjusted the limit screws or something, so I'd say yes, it is possible.
One of these days I'll learn this stuff.

Steev and Lossy have it right. If you want to know more, read Sheldon Brown's page (http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html).

I run a 5600 105 rear derailer with a 7 speed cluster and RSX brifters with no problems.

It will work perfectly. You'll have a much bigger problem locating 7 sp barcons. This is where Shimano outshines Campy. All their rear derailleurs are backwards compatible from 10 sp to 6 sp as long as they index. Campy has 2 different pull lengths on their derailleurs.

One excpetion: 7 and 8 speed Dura-Ace.

As long as the shifters are not Dura-ace.

Funny thing related to this thread: I was at my LBS today, and the mechanic showed me a White Industry rear hub with a 7-speed freehub on it.

Thanks to all who responded, and I greatly appreciate the information!

I'm currently using Suntour friction barcons. I'm going to replace them with a set of Shimano RSX downtube 7 speed index shifters mounted in Rivendell's new-production barcon bodies.
