I thought it would be a cool idea to swap the original Simplex Prestige derailleur on my 68 Raleigh Grand Prix for a more modern Suntour Cyclone, but NO CAN DO. The derailleur hanger won't accept the newer design and the dropouts aren't designed for it either. What would be a decent derailleur upgrade that will fit this bike? The Super Course for that year also had the Prestige. Is something a little later in the timeline like maybe Huret Jubilee a possibility? I'm not trying to keep everything period correct and have something like vintage campy ain't in the budget. I just want to tweak the ride and see what a difference a better derailleur might make. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Were you trying to install the Cyclone in the Huret derailleur hanger? It should work with a Japanese derailleur hanger. Those should be pretty cheap at the LBS.
I put a Cyclone on my wife's Super Course and used the Japanese claw with excellent results.

Find a Suntour hanger and use that. The Honor, GT, and V-GT often came on a hanger. It'll swap right in for the Simplex hanger.
I probably have a spare SunTour hanger, if you need one.

Thanks for the responses. I checked the salvaged Shimano DRs I had in the box, but nothing fit. I'll see what I can find regards Suntour. John E -- I may get back to you if I can't scrounge something up. PM OK?

I would look for a Jubilee if you're staying with the original narrow gearing, or a Huret Duopar if you want to go to wide-range friction shifting. The Duopars are near-period, have very wide range capability, and almost no overshifting or undershifting. I use one to shift a 7-speed Megarange.
If a Nuovo Record will fit your dropout, a used one might be cheaper than a NOS Duopar. Watch Ebay. Also check out Frank Berto's old book, Upgrading Your Bicycle from 1980 or so. Should be in your public library. He has a great list of available derailleurs and very sound assessments of their fitting issues and shifting performance.
