General Cycling Discussion - Should I ride or drive

Hello All

I have a job interview,at a new bicycle shop. That is opening in my town
doing general assemable of bickes/and doing some work on bikes, that are in for
service. It's a 20 min ride from my house. Question is should I ride the bike
over, or drive my wife's car, and be neat/ fresh for the interview. Didn't
know if riding my bike would help land the job.

Ride but ride at a calm pace, so you don't show up winded and dripping sweat.

Drive your car to within 1 mile, then ride the rest of the way. Just don't get caught doing it...;)

normally I would say don't ride to any interview, but it's a bike shop.

ride. they'll understand. it'll probably even get you some points, by showing that you are really into bicycles. if they don't and it doesn't I'll be really surprised.

just take it easy going in so you don't show up sweating. or get there really early and take some time to cool down.

yep. ride there. Ride easy. Give yourself plenty of time, arrive early enough to cool down first. Wear decent clothing, button up shirt, no jeans, NO spandex or jerseys. let them know (if there's an opening for you to mention it) that you rode to the interview.

Ride, but make sure your bike is perfectly tuned. It'll get interviewed, too, ya know.

You guys are from another planet. Here in California, nobody would care if you showed up at an interview for a bike shop wearing shorts and a t-shirt. They'd be more interested in what you know about bikes than if you know how to button your shirt and iron your pants.

The OP is apparently in Dayton Ohio. That may actually qualify as a different planet than anywhere in California.

Are you serious? Do you think you would land a job at your auto dealership ridding your bike?

For the other people, I feel more pumped up. I take them by surprise on how animated and positively hyper I am.

I was riding my bike, when I got a job,at a car dealership. Worked there 6 years, till the car line
was sold to another dealer, across the street. All the time I worked there, I got,Oh your too old
to ride a bike everyday,I was 56. And had just retired from G.M. After 30 years,and wasn't ready
to stop working, yet.
The saleman, was always, telling me they would give a good trade-in for my bike on a car...haha:D
In those 6 years I missed 10 days, not riding 5 days a week. I got use to all the your too old, and you
better buy a car, before your old bones, are found on the side of the road. I have always, wanted to
work in a bike shop, since I stated riding, back in the mid-late 70's. Bike shop around here, have very
few, job opening. So I'm going to jump on this job,and work in a bike shop, before I retire for good in
5 years. You need to go for your dreams, or your be, "Man I always wanted to work, in a bike shop,
and didn't get too.

My friend interviewed at a scooter shop in Denver. She showed up in a motorcycle jack carrying a helmet in gloves. The interview was more about her scooters than anything else. She has 5 or 6 vintage Vespas, she got the job.

Definitely ride the bike. Clean it, but make sure it looks like it gets ridden. If needed, replace tires, brake pads, bar tape etc... Make sure everything is in perfect working order. I'm not sure I would ride any of my bikes to an interview at a bike shop. :rolleyes:

i have an interview tomorrow. not at a bike shop. i plan on riding (even at -5C i know i'll be a bit sweaty) but i told the manager i'm a cyclist. i figure that if they want to hire me, that they should know who i am. cycling is a big part of who i am and the choices i've made in my life.
