"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - campy training wheelset recommendations?

i've just purchased a new ride that is coming decked-out with 07 chorus and campy zonda wheels. now, i know these aren't super-cream-of-the-crop wheels, but they are a considerable step up from my current train/race/everything wheelset: ultegra hubs laced to open pros....i figure i just laid out a ton of cash on the bike and wheels and don't mind spending a bit more for some bomb-proof training wheels, any recommendations?

(doesn't need to be a 'campy' brand wheelset, just campy compatible)

Fir "Pin" Rims laced to Miche hubs with 36 straight pull DT spokes. Bombproof and as heavy as a boat anchor..... Great for hill training. Makes my race day wheel set feel like wings.

Neuvation R28 Aero 2's are on sale for $299 I think.

Just get a conversion cassette for your Open Pros. Can't get much more sturdy than that is they are higher spoke count.

Then I'd still go with the conversion cassette (check your PM) and get the Reynolds Alta's that seem to be on sale for next to nothing. These are a great set of strong yet light wheels.

Or find some cheap Askim oe Cosmos on sale. I picked up some Cosmos with Campy freehub for $204 shipped and while I am not a huge Mavic fan they were cheap and are round and true...pretty heavy though.

you can get just about any wheel with a campy compatible hub. I ride campy scirrocco's for training and would put them up there with anything for bomb-proofness.

Campy Ventos are cheap as hell. Lickton's has them for $229. They are cheaper and lighter than Mavic Ksyrium elites. Also the Khamsin wheels are even cheaper, at about $190. But, I'd opt to spend a little more and get the Ventos.

thanks for all the suggestions....i'm going to talk to my team and see if i can get a deal on anything, if not it's a toss-up between the campy ventos and the reynolds alta's; just depending on the bottom line

Campy Protons would be a great bullet proof training/all-around wheel and they can be found cheap, since they have been discontinued for '07.

That's a good thought. I didn't realize Open Pros with Centaur hubs are just 1769g (according to Colorado Cyclist--$410). And with Chorus hubs they say 1737g, Record hubs 1717g.

I suggested Centaur/OP because I have a set. They are incredibly smooth, have remained super-true (even on the craptastic Garden Highway), have a classic look (if that's worth anything to you), and aren't likely to break the bank. I had mine handbuilt by my LBS so they were more expensive than CC's price, but still a good deal in my estimation.

If you are patient you can find some Fulcrum 5's right around $260 on eBay. So far these have been great wheels, great wheel for the money.
