Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - Announcing ... the NEW Alberta Randonneurs site

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Whew...I had almost given up on the old site, I was trying to access it for the last two months, just to get the 2007 schedule.
I like the new site, lots of info...I guess I know what I'll be reading for the next few days at work : )

/total newbie at randonneuring/brevets, hope to learn a lot this next season

Yeah, we were having some website difficultes! Long story. And my father gets the credit for sorting out all the difficulties and creating the new site. There are still several things he is working on ... but I guess that's normal with any website.

Just a note ... because our membership is so scattered and not very large, before you dash off to any ride, email and/or call the organizer first.

Of course...the way I understand it, any randonneur event is only successful if everyone participates, i.e. signs up for the event, checks in at the appropriate time/place...apparently it's not important if you even finish the event in first place, just follow the rules and help the other competitors, if necessary. Or am I missing something.

Well, to successfully complete a brevet (randonneuring event) you need to arrive at the controls on the route somewhere between their opening and closing times ... AND you need to finish within the time limit.

In some provinces (and other parts of the world) they actually get heaps of participants out to their events, so a person might ride with a group the whole way round. Here in Alberta however, it is entirely possible that a person might ride all the events solo. Even if there are a few other participants, we might all end up riding solo because we are all at different speed levels. I've ridden most of the events I've participated in here over the past two years solo, and expect I'll do the same again this year.

I very much wish we had enough participants so that we could ride in groups ... but for some reason we don't.

As for the rules, most of them are quite accurate, but a few are under review.

If you want to know more about Randonneuring, and especially about rides in Canada, and especially about rides in Alberta, check out my website in the signature line below. If you click on the "Brevet Stories" link in the list on the left, you'll come to a page with a whole list of stories about the brevets I've ridden. Pretty much all the ones I've done in the last two years have been done here in Alberta.

Sounds like fun...I've been touring quite a bit over the last few years (weather and work permitting); some of the shorter brevets would be a great way to spend a weekend.

The season only seems to last until the middle of June...is that because of the Paris-Brest-Paris event?

Or is it just to avoid the horrible bugs throughout July/August?

I recall riding to Hanna and back a few years ago, when the grasshoppers were really bad...I had to stop every 20 km or so and clean the bug juice off my rims and down tube.

Yes, that is because of the Paris-Brest-Paris. All the qualifiers have to be done by the middle of June. There are some events after that just to help us stay in shape though.

The new site looks great. I was getting frustrated that the old URL wouldn't work and then I stumbled onto the new URL. You Dad did a nice job.

Right now I am aiming to ride the Strathmore 200K 14 Apr & the Okotoks 200K on 21 Apr & the Kananaskis 200K on 5 May. I haven't bothered worrying about anything further down the line at this point. I don't think I am going to try for PBP this year so I'll just relax and ride the brevets that work for me best.

Even though I'll most likely be riding solo most of the time it will be nice to meet some local randonneurs.

I was hoping to get on the mailing list but the email address bounces back-I am interested in becoming a member but had a question about insurance-do I have to pay it if I am with another club and paid it already?

It sounds like a real interesting sport and I want to find out so much about it..

Wow... I wish we had anywhere near that many brevets scheduled. Looks like lots of choices and lots of fun.

Your schedule makes ours look downright pitiful. Ah, well... I'll have fun, anyway. :)

Maybe next year I can visit for a brevet or two. :) :)

Email Ken Myhre, he's the president. Scroll down on the first page, and click Ken's name beside the April 14th brevet.

I'm not sure about the insurance situation .... it's really unfortunate there's so much hassle with that now.

But if you've got any other questions, feel free to ask me. I've been involved in Randonneuring for 7 years, and have ridden with the Alberta Randonneurs for the past 2 years. :)
