And of course there's no chance that anyone else on BF intentionally or unintentionally shares ideas they may have heard elsewhere without attribution. Let the unmasking begin! I want only totally original ideas or a full citation!

Who'd guess that drivel on an internet bulletin board would be held to standards that an incredible percentage of students (and people masquerading as professionals) fail to achieve? :D

By folk cyclists, I meant cyclists whose first priority is staying out of the way of motor traffic, and using whatever space is left over.

I believe that most cyclists' first priority is, not to stay out of the way of traffic, but to get somewhere. Otherwise, the home is a good place to stay out of traffic. Bike lanes and other bicycle specific infrastructure undeniably helps people move around on a bicycle.

Vehicular cycling alone, without infrastructure improvements, helps only enthusiasts like you and me. It's spread to the normal cycling population is limited, and the spread of the VC worldview is miniscule after over 30 years of efforts.

I'm kind of inclined to go with what is shown to work on this one. Vehicular cycling techniques are undeniably useful, and many of them are already starting to become nomalized into bicycle operator manuals and put into practice by everyday cyclists. But dedicated space on the road and off the road is the only thing I've seen to correlate to concrete increases in the number of total cyclists. The number of people reached by the Effective Cycling or Road I/II course(s) is miniscule next to the number of cyclists that bike lane and other bicycle dedicated infrastructures impact.

Reason, here in Roussillon , motorists are respectful of cyclists. Law says you can't pass a bike with less than one meter's distance. That pretty much nails any motorist that hits a cyclist. In theo country, it's 1/5 meters.

YeeHaw! I'm a folk cyclist! I'm gettin me a banjo to go with my fiddle! Ma 'n Pa will cook up a possum stew and fire up the still if anybody wants ta git on over to the folk cyclist gatherin. You gots ta ride your bike of course. And make sure you use that there bike lane. You wouldn't wanna git in nobody's way, now, or look like some damn fool city slicker. Mama warned me about them.

I don't think that's what folk cyclists are, mr head. you just want a derisive term for riders that don't ride like you, neophyte traffic rider.

I like folk music, I split lanes on crowded drawbridges, I ride VC''' and I STILL want greater cognition on the lawbooks for cyclists rights.

cyclists should support laws like this proposed Oregon law. all you chestbeating anti-cyclists need to do a reality check.

cyclezealot

Anti least all the anti cyclists in Oregon are not like the anti-cyclist legislator out in South Dakota. He proposed anti cycling laws after he hit a cyclist? He had a court trial and then; anyone recall what the outcome was.? Seems he went to jail?

I don't think it is an either/or proposition. I have seen untrained cyclists using BL in a manner that was outright foolish. Attempting to make left turns from a BL is not a good idea.

My commute takes me right past the UCSD campus and I see all sorts of cyclists... many of which clearly need some sort of guidance about how to cycle in the streets and how to safely use a bike lane.

Why we somehow think that a stripe on the street is enough to guide an untrained person who is moving amoung 2 ton vehicles is beyond me.

But at the same time, this VC' and VC'' stuff... come on.

Some basic road rules need to be learned and applied... getting downright militant (or alpha lion) about cycling is just over the top for many cyclists. Save that stuff for "the track."

How many lanes must a man ride centerish
Before you can call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many bike lanes much a VC remove
Before the streets are ready to ride?
Yes, 'n' how many folks should be force to the curb
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Yadda yadda...

HH never said he invented it, he merely said it was his favorite...I'm the one who assumed it was his idea.

Yes, beware the blue moon tonight and potentially the end of the world, since I am defending HH.

Yeah! And you were the culprit giving him "credit" for anything useful. That blue moon has cast a spell upon you. Get over it!
