Advocacy & Safety - Police cruiser hits bicyclist

Details sketchy, but on the Seattle TV news as I type. Police cruiser hits bicyclist in industrial district south of town. slams rider into semi trailer, and cruiser then crashes into subshop.

I have no further details at this time, but wonder if the driver was texting on his dashboard computer at the moment of impact, talking on his cellphone, or had a health emergency like a heart attack.

POLICE running into bicyclists is really a bit beyond the pale for those that are pledged to serve and protect.

Buildings don't swerve at all. But bikes can, and bike riders have been known to enter the street from the sidewalk without looking at speed. I'm not saying this is what did happen, just that it might be the case. Heck what might have happened is a car not mentioned pulled out from the curb, the cyclist swerved to avoid it and the cop swerved to avoid the cyclist (and did not totally succeed).

Well teh cops do hit the donut shops. I was involved in a non-incident in hte Mamoth Lakes area when I was doing youth work with the YMCA. A chronologically adult individual got in an argument with one of the older kids. A bit later there were 3 or 4 police cars in the lot. We were worried that the jerk had found the kid and called him out (kid would have carved him like a turkey). Turned out to be a false alarm, the cops were all in the donut shop.

I refuse to eat donuts on duty, but you do have to laugh at yourself a bit:

True story: a few years ago, I was meeting some folks after work in Brookline, which is a Boston suburb.

Beacon Street in Boston runs through Kenmore Square, near Fenway Park ("America's Most Beloved Ballpark," as the Red Sox like to tell us), and into Brookline, where it is mostly a four-lane boulevard with a trolley down the middle. This main thoroughfare is often backed-up at rush hours, but this particular night it was jammed solid for about a mile and a half of stop-and-stop. Naturally, I moved through the stopped traffic, slowly but steadily. As I aproached the intersection with Harvard Street at Coolidge Corner, I realized that the right lane was blocked.

The problem? A police cruiser was double-parked outside of Dunkin Donuts in Coolidge Corner. Naturally, I assumed that foul play was involved, and that the peace officers were merely doing their duty. But as I neared the shop, I saw an officer emerge with a bag and two cups of coffee in a tray.

He entered the car, and the driving officer turned his lights and siren on to compel the traffic to give way. It did. The two lanes restored, traffic began to move again.

I've seen a lot, riding around metro Boston all months of the year. But I never thought I'd see a cop pull over a donut shop. :D

A pair from our police bike patrol participated in a community donut eating contest on the last Car Free Day. They were such good sports.

I hope this cyclist pulls through. Will you keep us posted, oh Puget folk?
