Recumbent - Newbie Trike Suggestions

Hi,

I am a long time bike rider. My back can no longer take my roadbike due to bad disk. My questions are:

1) Trike or other recumbant?
2) I am not a small guy. I am 6 ft and 260. I have not been riding "for real" for a two or three years just the occasional 20 or 30 mile jaunt.

I am looking for the following:

1) Comfort
2) Decent speeds for road conditions
3) Safety

While I am not super fast, I am not slow either. I am used to riding a road bike with Dura Ace STI. I don't want a slug, but don't want to break the bank.

So what should I be looking at? Wheelwiz?

Irodguy: I am not a trike rider but will give the first advice most give when looking for the first recumbent...try as many as you can, both trike and bike. Not sure what kind of local bike options you have available but Dallas-Fort Worth is not too far to do some looking too..... if I remember my geography. Maybe some others will know some more options.

I hear there is a Catrike dealer in Richardson, TX. That's right next door to Plano.

If you are at 260lbs and you want a trike I 'd be looking at the WizWheel Cruiser or the Tour model, both have a combined weight limit(rider and gear) of 300lbs. Catrike as with most other trikes run only 270 to 275lbs limit. The WizWheel would do and have eveything you're looking for in a trike and at a price that's affordable, at $1299 I don't think you can beat it.

Yes there is unfortunately somewhat painful to deal with. I tried to purchase my road bike there years ago and their attitude cost them a 3k sale. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried again last week for the trike and found much the same arrogance. They only "offered" to let me ride a trike after I badgered them into it. The dealer here in Plano is so much nicer and has a much better reputation for customer service. The only problem is their not as big. I can order several model trikes from them but they don't stock anything my size. The did stock a Rans recumbent and were more than happy to let me ride it.
