Slacker.

Frank, Magicant WILL be joining for this ride the day after the Palm Springs Century (so far, it will be you, Jason and Joel!). He clearly wishes to inspire me and get me to improve my pathetic attempts at getting the miles and climbs in. In fact, I'm sure he will in no way "slack off" and will wish to ride from Sherman Oaks to the start line. I can't wait for the ride reports and pics! :D

Slacker. Vireo had his widsom teeth removed and rode 100 miles two days after (without having eaten any solid food 48 hours prior to the ride). He still had the stitches in his jaw! So, what's a little tonsil removal? :D

Looks like you're doing the 11th and the 24th.

I'd prefer the 24th, but that's because I'm woefully out of shape and need the trim up...and I'm slow...and my bike's too small...

I think I'll leave from my house and meet y'all at the Old 395/Old Castle intersection, and return via Lake Wohlford...unless I just do an out and back.

If I return via Lake W, it'll be 89 miles...an out and back from my house is 105. I figure if I leave about the same time as you guys, we'll get to Old Castle (roughly mile 31) at the same time...and it's a good rest stop, so either of us won't mind waiting.

The ride is on the 11th, so I'll see both of you then.

The 24th is for anyone who wants to climb Palomar but can't do it on the 11th. I don't mind going twice in a month, I need the practice.

I still haven't come up with a catchy name. After readingSandy Eggo Sesquicentury, I'm liking the simple yet to the point Palomar Century more and more. Sandy Eggo. I dare you to go down to Home Avenue and say that to someone. :D

mmkay, I just found out my wife and kid will be out of town this day. How crazy is this ride? I've done baldy but that beat the snot out of me. Plus I've never done a century. I'm leaning toward maybe but would like some advice. If I start working hard on climbing TODAY, can I be significantly more ready by then?

the first 55 miles will be tough but after that, the rest is 95% downhill or flat. There is one major climb outa the valley when we come back and a few more rollers on the back roads to the beach. Palomar is simular to GMR, both are about the same grade. Palomar is about 16miles or so from the bottom to the top where we are going. Just take it slow and steady and you'll make it up. Then next time you can push it more since you know what to expect. It's rought 6-6.5% grade most of the way up, about 3/4 up, there are a few corners that it gets a bit steeper but only last for about 75-100 yards.

If you want to go, start doing some climb tomorrow and Wednesday, recover on Thursday and take friday and saturday off the bike. You'll need the leg strength on sunday.

I drove about 80% of the route today. I changed it a little, substituting Gopher Canyon Rd. for Camino del Rey to get the distance down to under 110. I'll have the route slip ready tonight or tomorrow for review. Because of the distance and daylight hours, I only put in 3 stops. If anyone would like the route, stops or route slip formatting changed, just let me know.

Billy, there are some significant climbs on the route. I don't know how many vertical feet but I'm guessing a bunch. My rule of thumb is for every climb there is a descent and for every descent there is a climb.

So we'll be going up S. Sante Fe and Left on Gopher Canyon Rd?

On the original slip I did, it showed about 8200ft of climbing. Going up Gopher might be a lil better, the drop in from the light gets a lil tight as far as shoulder room, then the long grid up to the 15. Either way, it should be fun. I'm going to get some more base miles in this week and pray that all my parts arrive by friday for installation night.

So we're just cutting off that little extra loop on Camino del Rey.
