A guy I work with has a 74 PX 10, and today he brought me the original catalog,
and some bicycling Magazine reviews from 73 and 76. thought you guys might have a use for it.

The guy I got it from bought his on 11-16-1974, he showed me the original receipt from the bike shop. Paid $290 for it. he then bought his wife one in 1976. maybe the catalog was 73? specs look pretty close to the review in bicycling, and the guy says his bike is identical to the one on the cover, black lugs and all.

you can see on the Bicycling review page where the shop owner jotted down the changes he made prior to purchase...changed small ring in front from 45 to 40, and rear freewheel from 14-23 to 14-34!

Thanks for posting the road test and specs. I just bought an identical PX-10 at a flea market for $55. Gotta clean it up, but it looks to be in pretty good shape. Paint, decals and chrome are all in real good shape. Both my PX-10s have plain lugs. I date them as either 72 or 73.

I bought my '74 PX10LE new, but it was equipped differently. The saddle was an Ideale 2001. the hubs were Maillard Peugeot Trophy (700) and the brakes were MAFAC Competition. The lugs on mine are plain and white with a gold outline.

Looking at my '74 catalog I noticed something. The bike in the Bicycling Magazine article has its fork curvature concentrated in lower portion of the leg. All the PX models in my catalog have a gradual curvature down the length of the leg.

Dirtdrop...your bike matches the specs in my catalog.

The price sounds about right; I recall retail $260 in 1972.

Original gearing was even tighter than that. Every PX-10 we sold at Bikecology in 1972-1974 came originally with 52-45 / 14-15-17-19-21. The most popular conversion was to swap in a 14-26 or a 14-28 freewheel and to leave the chainrings alone. We built up quite a stash of Cyclo 14-21 freewheels!

Note that the AO-8/UO-8/UE-8/UO-18/UE-18 still had downtube-mounted shifters at the time of publication. The stem shifters must have been a running change during the 1974 model year.

I have been communicating with Andrew Muzi at YellowJersey and he took a good look at his '1963' brochure which is identical to yours. He noted that the PX-10 type E photo shows a Stronglight Type 63 crank (obsolete by 1974), but the text indicates a Stronglight Type 93 (after 1970). The photo and text do not match. Furthermore, he observed that the rear changer is the Criterium type (1964~1975), and that the brakes are Mafac Racer, not the 1973 and later Competition type. Consequently, he believes the catalog is early 1970s vintage. I see that the UO-8 does not have a round chainring guard and comes in blue, white, red, burgundy and green. According to Ian Kersey's UO-8 Specifications Matrix, this combination of characteristics pre-dates 1973. The UO-8 descriptions completely match his 1970 catalog specifications. Although he has information on 1970 and 1973 catalogs, he does not have information on 1971 and 1972 catalogs. Therefore, I believe the catalog is either 1970, 1971 or 1972. Can anyone else add to this? I would like to get the right date on my http://www.retropeugeot.com/ website. Thanks.

Thanks for the catalog! Its great! I printed it out for a friend that has two PX-10s, one was his from when he was a teenager, heres a pic of my Peugeot, no big whoop, but I like it! :D

Specific issues or years?:p I hate to say it but I think I still have most of the ones from about '74-80:eek: ...you could always hit your local library too. Ours archives magazines by hard binding them for a certain period then they go on microfilm/fiche....you think they would get with modern technology and put them in a search able data base.;)

Oops. I just noticed that the catalog states "five flamboyant colors" but only lists four. The catalog does not include the burgundy listed in Ian Kersey's UO-8 specifications matrix for c1970. Also, the catalog states that the AO-8 only comes in blue and red. I have a 1972 AO-8 (at least according to the serial number and dates on the rims and freewheel). That leaves me pretty confused. I have listed the catalog as early 1970s on my website for now.

My interest would be 1974, the time I worked in a bike shop. We sold Gitane, so anything regarding Gitane would be interesting, as well as the Nishiki International from the same era.

I never thought I'd be nostalgic about THOSE days, but bikes will do it if anything will! :)

Yeah, its real.....real fake! LOL! Its a 2004 repop, its a sweet rider, but its not a real Schwinn, its an undercover Pacific ;) itll prob be gone within five years if I dont take care of it, the purple one in the back is a Bratz lowrider, I bought it for my daughter a while back, she rode it around for a bit then went back to her retro Schwinn BMX, and yes, I have a strange/bizzare but cool collection of bikes :D

Why'd you have to post that. Now I had to go out and buy this 72 PX-10 :D .
It's all original except for the paint, rims and lack of decals and conversion to bar ends. Gotta love that old Brooks Professional, SWEEEET.
Now its decision time. Do I ride it as is or send it out for a resto paint job? Any suggestions?

I just noticed that the catalog in this thread and the one posted on the yellowjersey and my retropeugeot websites are not identical. The photos are, but not the color choices and some component specs.

Thanks for the photos. Back in the day, the PX-10 was the "affordable" alternative to a Paramount, or to an all Campy Italian bike. Lots of America's best cyclists in the 1970's got their start on one of these French bikes with their plastic gear changers.

Yup. The PX-10 was light, agile, and resilient.

On the subject of frame color options, I do recall that when I started working at Bikecology in 1972 the AO-8 came in green or blue and the UO-8 came in green, blue, or white. 90 percent of our female customers wanted a white UO-18. We sold PA-10s, PR-10s, and PX-10s in white only, because that was what the (west Los Angeles) public demanded. By 1974 we had added yellow, purple, orange, and champagne UO-8s.

I do concur that the "1974" catalogue seems to describe 1972 Peugeots.
