What does your USCF License say?
I'm a Cat 4. Hopelessly mired in Cat 4dom I might add. AND.....LOVING it. That lets me do the Vets races. And that's all I've ever cared about (I didn't really get into bike racing much until I was 35+, now I'm 49, so the chances of me upgrading to Cat 3 are Cat ZERO). Did I mention how bad I suck at this sport yet?
My racing age is FIFTY. Is that the USCF plan to get you depressed, by reminding you you'll be a year older @ the end of 2007?
It's working.
It chuckles a little when it says Cat 4. :D

Hey, here's a question for you golfers: if a Cat 2 = a scratch golfer, what does a Cat 3 translate into as a golf handicap? 5 strokes? More? How about Cat 4 or 5?
That should keep you busy until April. Figure that one out.
Mine will be Cat 4, Racing age 57 when I renew in the next day or two. Not much chance of getting beyond Cat 4. I race a combination of 55+, 45+, and 35+ 4/5.
I'll tell you after my next top 10. :D
Actually I'm a mediocre 4 that happened into some good placings last year, so I'm a few points from a 3. Racing age is 27, started 3 years ago in triathlons and 1.5 in road racing.

5 here, but I'm sandbagging a bit(according to teammates, I'm clueless), I'd guess I'm probably solid cat 3 pack fodder.

Have you raced in 10 cat 5 races? If so, I'd listen to your teammates. :D

just 5 races, but I got 22nd(race was screwed up so I don't count it :D), 4th, 6th, 4th, 3rd and that was after only 3 months of bike riding of any kind. I've been riding a lot since then so I've gotten a lot faster.

Send that to your local upgrade rep and I'm guessing you'd get a cat 4 sticker shortly thereafter, provided that they weren't training races, etc.

I'm a Cat 4, but haven't renewed my USCF license yet. Probably will towards the end of the spring.

I kinda want to win a 5 race before I cat up, so hopefully I cat up after the first GA Cup race. The 4 races from last year were pretty big(GA cup finale & the george hincapie-greenville classic race), so I bet they'd upgrade if I asked, but I'm not positive.

How is it possible to sandbag in 5s? I thought 10 races was the minimum and maximum requirement for an upgrade. Not much choice in the matter.

I thought the same way, and managed some top 10/top 5 finishes, but I realized that I wasn't really getting better staying in the 5's. Riding/racing with the cat 4 guys on my team has really helped me develop fitness, but also a lot more skill/strategy. I wouldn't necessarily hold out for that win, IMHO.

How is it possible to sandbag in 5s?
1. No mandatory upgrading
2. One day license holders over and over again
3. People afraid to upgrade

Cat3 and I race 3s and Master 35+ on the same day...
35+ here is Cat3 and better only...
I actually don't have a USCF license, but my OBRA license says Cat3, racing age 39. 1 more year and I get to race 40+!

I'd rather be fodder in the IIs field than a contender in the IIIs.
Not trying to down anyone here. I just enjoy the speed, intensity, and relative safety of the IIs races.
There's also something about being in the main event even if I'm tailgunning.

Depends on your regional rep. My first season, I did 6 cat5 races: 2 wins, a 2nd, a 3rd, a 4th and an 8th. I was told no ten races, no upgrade.

I'm a Women's Cat 4 track, cat 4 road. My goal is to upgrade to Cat 3 on the track this year. I will probably be a Cat 4 on the road for the rest of this millennium, and most of the next, because racing on the road absolutely terrifies me. I much prefer the safety and familiarity of the track.
However, the senior guy on our track team is a Cat 2 on the track (and probably ought to be a Cat 1, the way he can race), but he's only Cat 4 on the road. Which makes him a total dark horse on the start line. His track training and track skills mean that he just vaporizes roadies in a crit, but he doesn't do it often enough (once or twice a year) to be able to upgrade his road catetory.
I'm secretly hoping to do that, too -- be a Cat 1 woman on the track, and then do cat 4 crits on the road.

This is right next to 'sandbagging' in the Webster's dictionary. EXCELLENTTTT!!!!!
If this sport had any MONEY in it like pool/billiards, you could hustle some dough with tactics like that. But it's CYCLING.
Oh well. Besides, then they'd call you a 'bike-shark'. But that sounds better than 'bike weenie'.

Cat 4 with a probable upgrade sometime this year.
Mine says, "Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight, get down tonight"
Actually the racing age reads....50
Cat 3 road and track. I have not done any road racing for a few years, but I'll be at Trexlertown every week.
Mine says Category 3. Racing age 36. I do a bunch of Master 30+ races. I doubt I'll ever upgrade to Cat 2, as a 3 I can already do most of the elite events as they are usually 1/2/3 fields, and I doubt I'll ever have enough training time to be a competitve 2. If I ever feel unchallenged by the Cat 3 fields (ya, sure) I'll focus more on masters.

What can I do? You can't upgrade your road category, just because you've upgraded on the track. You have to get out on the starting line and do your ten races, or whatever, to upgrade on the road.
Someday.
Besides, it works the other way around, too. Last Sunday, I was racing against a bunch of Cat 4 beginning women on the track -- who are all Cat 1 roadies. Creamaroonie!!
