Commuting - OK I'm taking the plunge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Assuming I get up in time tomorrow I'm going to attempt my very first L.A. commute on my new Sirrus. Going from the South Bay to Santa Monica. If it goes well I'd like to do it twice a week at least during the summer.
Plus if I do well commuting I could justify the Sirrus as my "commuter" and get that road bike I've been thinking about for weekends. :D
Wish me luck.
thanks for everyones help here.

Hi Rats13, a year ago I made the same decision. My "reward" was to buy myself a nice new mountain bike if I kept the commuting up. I'm still really enjoying it, hope it works out for you!

 Just take it slow at first and increase the # of days as you go.Thats what I did.I am up to 26 miles a day 5 to 6 days a week.

Rats13: Welcome to the club! One tiny bit of advice - no matter how well planned you think you are it's going to take you an extra 15 minutes to get out of the house tomorrow. :)
I finally have my routine down and can get from the bed to the bike in under 30 minutes.

WOOT!!!! :)
Good luck Rats13-I just started commuting this week too. I'm about 20 minutes bed to bike and then about 30 to work. I love it. I'm saving a ton of money, getting about 15 miles per day, and feel great (although I am a little tired today). It's alot easier than I thought. I think I'll take Gojohnnygo's advice and ride 3-4 days this week and crank it up over the next couple of weeks. Wouldn't you know it's been raining and/or drizzling everyday this week too.
Unlike you, it's now time for me to make up for all the rewards I've already given myself (1 commuter and 2 mountain bikes).

Thanks all. I made in this morning in 1hour 20 mins. :D
Not sure total distance since I haven't gotten my computer yet. It's aboutt 16 miles by car but since I took the coast I'm guess maybe 18-20 miles.
Took a shower here at work and I feel GREAT!

Rats13: Congrats! Now that you've done it have you asked yourself "Why didn't I start doing this sooner?" :) I didn't ride into work today because I had a doctor's appt to go to. It felt funny driving instead of riding.

LOL! I'm not sure I'd even call that a "commute." More like a short tour of the neighborhood.
Good job and welcome to the wonderful world of bike commuting.
