Southern California - Short rides out of Buellton

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a working assignment in Buellton at the end of the month, staying at the Marriott there. I hope to sneak in a 2-hour ride in the morning before going to work. Does anyone know of (or have a link to) the best short-route in the area?
I've never been there, and the bike routes I've downloaded are century-length. I don't have a lot of time so I'm looking for the best 'bang for the buck' so to speak. Prefer nice scenery to hills, but any advice would be helpful.
P.S. In a nice twist of scheduling, the Tour of CA Time Trials are going to be held in Solvang the following day! :)

Given more time, you could do a Sideways tour....:D

Lucky you!!
It is gonna be tough to do a non-hilly ride around there, the only one that comes to mind is west on 246 to La Purisma Mission and back.
Another possibility is Santa Rosa Road, (west on 246 to Flying Flags to Santa Rosa) is rolling hills to Highway 1.
But if you want hills, there are several options, 246 west to Drum Canyon, up and over and then back. I would also check out Ballard Canyon, (east on 246 to Ballard).

Thanks Thomson, I'll look into those.
I'm traveling with a friend who will bring a rented bike, so she doesn't have a lot of bikehandling skills. (She needs some away-time from her boyfriend, so I invited her to come work as my assistant.) I mentioned a "side trip" to see a lil' ol' bike race... little does she know she's signed up for a crash course of Pro Cycling 101. :p Don't worry, by the end of the day she'll know who David Zabriskie is. Resistance is futile.

Where does one apply to be your assistant?

The only prerequisites to becoming my assistant is having spent time listening to me cry in my beer over lousy boyfriends, cheering me on at the end of a triathlon and truthfully telling me, yes, that DOES make me look fat. ;)

Sounds like bike skills isn't the only thing she's signed up for.
