This question was asked but not answered in the Totally Tubular thread and it raised my curiosity. Why are pista rims more square in the cross-section than strada rims?
they don't need the extra surface for braking?
my strada rims all are rather "U" shaped (but closed)
the pista rims I've seen all were much shallower thus more

Is it near impossible to find vintage pista tubulars? Just wondering if anyone knows what models of ambrosio were considered pista.

Pista specific rims varied depending on the maker.
Fiamme had some nice ones that were quite narrow at the inside surface, and the "sides" were not parallel, no good braking surface there. Perhaps the first "aero" rim.
Martano for a time, the Pista rims lacked machined grooves on the sides. But the sides were machined flat.
Super Champion on the lighter rims left off the "rows of dots" side stampings, but the rims were also used for roadwork.
Scheeren, made the same for everyone, but one had to be light and careful to ride Weltmeisters, sub 200 grams. Major bling as they polish up like chrome, a 6 day favorite. Also liked as the rim was wide and provided much glue surface. Ride those with Clement No. 1's with 10 atmospheres in them and one cannot avoid feeling fast.
Mavic also left off the stampings for braking enhancement on the lighter rims.
Nisi had their "Oro" 200 gram hoops that one would be silly to use on the road or weigh 100lbs or less.
