Introductions - Hey, to all my fellow road cyclists

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello, people--
My name's Shari, and I'm from Valencia, CA. I got to be a rabid cycling enthusiast a little over two years ago, when I was trying to drop a lot of baby weight from my third (and last) pregnancy. At the time, I was close to 200 lbs. Now I'm right at 135, thanks to cycling. What started it for me was just happening to watch the 2000 Tour de France. I was so impressed by those guys, and although I knew I'd NEVER be that good, I vowed I'd at least give the sport itself a shot. So that Christmas, I got a Cannondale R600 with a triple crank, and--well, need I say more?!:) The longest ride I've ever been on thus far has been a metric century; therefore, my current goal is to complete an actual century. I've also been doing the Piru time trials here and there, and even attempted a little track-racing, though that's scary as hell--ashamed as I am to admit it. Anyway, I'm trying to hook up with other cyclists, with whom I can talk, and maybe learn something from, as I still feel I have a lot to learn (like drafting, etc.) Also, if there are cyclists out there from the Santa Clarita Valley or even the San Fernando Valley area, look me up sometime, as I can't really learn group riding techniques unless I actually ride with other people!

Let's ride,
Shari Whelan(arianrhod63)

Hi Sheri, do you ride with the Santa Clarita Velos at all? Just wondering since the last two centuries I have done (wildflower in SLO and Solvang) I have seen quite a few riders with the club jersey on.

Hi, guys!
Nice to hear from a couple of you. Actually, I've considered riding with the SCV Velo, but frankly I'm somewhat intimidated by them, although I probably shouldn't be. I sort of view them as way above me in ability, as most of them have been cycling a helluva lot longer than I have. I'm actually looking to ride with people more along my ability and thus far limited experience.

I know what you mean Arianrhod, Down in OC.. we have the OC Wheelmen.. about a year ago I was riding solo and just getting back into cycling, when this pack of cyclists caught me, and flew by me like I was stopped, I was in awe of their speed and ability... I still won;t ride with them... not until I get myself faster... even though now i'm in pretty good shape and could probably hang with them.. until then I ride with the Bike Club of Irvine... I think the average age there is about 45.. and I, being 28, can pretty much smoke any of them at anytime.. but they are a good group to ride with :-)

Well, thanks so much, Jeff . . . that makes me feel better! Actually I think the SCV Velo riders are all guys--I don't think any women ride with them at all, that I know of, which might be what makes them seem so arrogant. What I would love to do is hook up with either a club or just a bunch of unattached riders where there are at least one or two other women to balance things out a bit. CYCLING NEEDS MORE WOMEN!
