what's the difference between a cassette, freewheel, and freehub?

The freewheel is the whole deal, the ratchet mechanism that lets you"freewheel", and the cogs in one package. The cogs can be removed but generally it will come as a package.
A freehub is a freewheel mechanism only. It has splines to allow you to index the cassette on to it. And the cassette would be a collection of cogs, that at one time came loose so you could pick your combo, but now come pinned together as a set.
Freehub/cassette is now more popular and will allow you to run a taller gear, up to an 11t, than a freewheel. You can also just replace the worn out parts.
That being said you almost never see a freewheel ratchet wear out but I have seen quite a few freehubs fail.
They can both be rebuilt, if you enjoy being hit in the shins with a yard stick you might want to try it sometime. There are a lot of tiny bearings in both types, looks like a thousand when it comes apart. and they all have to be greased into place so they will stay put while you try to finagle the ratchet fingers back into position.

The freewheel has the ratchet and cogs as one unit. The freehub is a ratchet that is built into the hub. The cassette cogs come off the freehub.
