Oh, that's a big question!

What kind of riding are you looking at?

Welcome to BF!

Best advise is to read some posts in each forum, start narrowing down what type of riding you are looking to do, and then start visiting your local bike shops to get a better idea of what is avaliable near by. Don't hesitate to ask a question, but also be sure to use the search funciton as there is so much valuable information already stored in the forum.

Welcome to the forum. :)

I second what cuda2k said. For starters, figure out what you want to do with your bike. Commute to and from work? Ride the bike path? Ride a dirt trail? Cross the country? Check out the appropriate subforums for more specific advice. Good luck.

Buy lots of bikes for all the different types of riding you will do, and for the different seasons. Go to the commuter forum for multipurpose bikes.

Oh, he'd want to visit us in the Classic & Vintage section then--it's the cheapest way (well, sometimes) to get enough different bikes to cover ALL the variables ;) .

But AndrewP's got a good idea, there, you probably want to start with what is essentially an all around all purpose bike--and that's a commuter.
